Gritty, but good.
The acting is good. The show is entertaining. The characters are miserable. The writing is good. The plot gets unbelievably ridiculous. (Don't try to figure it out. It's designed to be shockingly unable.)
The characters in this show are disgusting. We have drug addicts, suicide, murder, teenage pregnancy, adultery, drinking, smoking, violence, married men impregnating teenagers, lying, lying, lying . . .
Mare (Mary Ann) played by Kate Winslet, is a small town detective who continually breaks police protocol, plants drugs on personal enemies, investigates murder suspects with no backup, and sometimes even without a weapon (what police detective doesn't have a personal firearm and a conceal carry permit?) smokes, drinks beer continually, curses constantly with her family around the kids . . .
Her partner puts his hand on his sidearm. But then gets shot by a criminal who has to reach behind his back and under his shirt. (Not exactly Quick Draw McGraw.) Right after he tells Mare he never really solved the case he's famous for.
A friend of Mare's daughter, who is in high school, is murdered. Mare is investigating. She calls her daughter continually all day. Daughter never answers her calls. Never calls her back.
This show fills America's fascination with the bottom of the barrel of humanity. I guess everybody in Easttown is not as miserable as these people. (But if they are, I'd stay away from Easttown. It's a real place, by the way.)
It's entertaining if you like miserable people. And a murder mystery that continually takes unbelievable turns and unexpected surprises.
I gave it an 8 because it's done well. And most of the stuff available for viewing in movies, TV and streaming, is garbage.
