No offense to the great Archie Stimpton, of course. Archie, you know we love you!

No offense to the great Archie Stimpton, of course. Archie, you know we love you! None taken. I don’t do number ratings so I can’t agree on 10/10 but everything the OP said is right. Paced well, builds well in terms of character and plot (the best of which is the phone calls which steadily grow from compliant to doubting to suspicious to outright rejecting, great stuff) the 90’s vibe is palpable, the connections to the larger MCU are delicious. So yeah. No doubt over WW and 84 isn’t even in the ballpark.

Captain Marvel is just dull from a directing standpoint and Brie Larson (a generally decent actress) has anti-charisma in the movie. With that being said, the stuff during the first half with Samuel L. Jackson and her when she first starts doing stuff on Earth is passable enough entertainment, but whenever the movie veers more into it's dramatic and serious parts it just fails miserably. I feel no emotion at all while watching this movie.
It isn't a good movie, it isn't a terrible movie. It just exists.

. I feel no emotion at all while watching this movie. It isn't a good movie, it isn't a terrible movie. It just exists. And I think that's what makes Captain Marvel feel different from other MCU flicks. There are other MCU movies worse than CM, but all of them have a certain amount of heart. CM, while it's a competently done movie and better than some MCU movies, feels very flat and emotionless.

Captain Marvel is the only MCU movie I struggled to finish.

I do enjoy Captain Marvel to a certain extent (enough to have it in my Blu Ray collection and watch it occasionally in my MCU marathons) but it’s definitely one of the weaker entries in the franchise. When people accuse Marvel movies of being “cookie cutter” this movie is what they are talking about. It’s entertaining but not particularly special in any way.

TBH I don’t know much about it other than Carol, Monica, and Kamala will share the focus along with maybe Blue Marvel? I suppose that means Carol is coming back to Earth, which surprises me a little, I thought they might focus on what she was doing in space with the Kree Skrull war. Soooooo I don’t really know anything other than that. As usual I can’t wait to hear more though.

Honestly this is a very enjoyable movie that flows really well to me. It’s one of those that flips to the next scene and I want to watch it too. Hala, then the mission, then the escape, then meeting Nick and Coulson at the Blockbuster, then the dual chases, then the autopsy, then the desert bar, then the file room, then the personal backstory, and then it gets into some cool space stuff again complete with chill ambient space music. It’s just smooth. The most impressive writing touch IMO is the progression of her relationship with Yon-Rogg through her phone calls. First, the rigged pay phone to make interstellar calls is just amazing, but she moves from curious, to doubtful, to suspicious each call, and this is bookended by her in person meetings with him which are fully trusting to start and straight up against him at the end. It’s a subtle well played character transition. And she shows a ton of range here. Shes vengeful at times, overjoyed at others, sarcastic and then focused, distraught then playful, contemplative then expressionate etc. Easy watching 90’s nostalgia with fun characters for me. And what happened to the 4th Skrull?

And I think that’s basically what they’re going for here. Although it will be primarily characters from Carol’s mythos, which is the way to go with it. The idea that it may take place primarily on Earth is a bit disappointing though. I too was hoping for more Skrull/Kree stuff... in space!

People seemed excited by the idea but I couldn’t get around the thought that almost none of the women know eachother or would seem to have a convenient way to interact, especially in some way that didn’t involve their closest male counterparts. But Carol and pals, with possibly a stop off to Asgard seemed like a solid enough way to get a decent number of these women together.

I agree that the Adventures of Captain Marvel is really good.
