Collingwood's senior coach of ten years Nathan Buckley has announced his retirement mid season following a 3-9 start to the 2021 season. The decision comes amidst off field turmoil at the club which began with the leaking of a damning internal report which highlighted issues with systemic racism at the club. The report ultimately led to the resignation of long time club president Eddie McGuire who was one of Buckley's key backers.
He will walk away with a coaching record of 116-1-99 from 217 games, a winning record of 54%, having taken the club to 5 finals series, three top 4 finishes and a losing Grand Final in 2018.
During Buckley's playing career he played 260 games over 14 seasons with Collingwood from 1994-2007 after winning the AFL Rising Star award (Rookie of the year) with Brisbane in 1993. Buckley was 7xAll-Australian, won the AFL Player's Association MVP and Brownlow Medal in 2003, and became only the third man to be awarded the Norm Smith medal (Best on Ground in the Grand Final) on a losing side in 2002. He was named in the Collingwood Team of the Century in 2008 and inducted into the AFL Hall of Fame in 2011. He was also named the AFLPA Coach of the Year in 2018. For his accolades, Buckley's SANFL Premiership with Port Adelaide in 1992 was his only Grand Final success as a professional player.
This is a hard one for me. I think he was a good coach who could have turned the club around for a second time if given the chance. But his ignoring of Herieter's Lamumba's racism complaints played a huge part in what has engulfed the club this year so perhaps he needed to go.
He's been a huge part of my club for 28 years. With a tear in my eye: I'll miss him.

Can’t see Bucks popping up at another club in a head coaching role TBH. He’s too “Collingwood” now.
Big appointment coming up - do the Pies give a second chance to an established coach, or go with a rookie ?

If it were Eddie he would be on the phone with Adam Simpson, John Longmire or Alistair Clarkson right now. If they said no he'd phone Ross Lyon, Paul Roos, probably even Lethal before even looking at the next tier down (Chris Scott, can't really think of any others).
If they were going to go with an untried coach you'd reckon a recently retired great like Sam Mitchell would have the closest to the type of profile Collingwood generally chase.
I don't think they'll be looking at David Teague or Justin Longmuir type.

Leigh Matthews is an interesting suggestion. Coached them in 1990 didn’t he ? Although I reckon he’d be reluctant to leave the Lions again, given where they are and where the pies are.
My money is on the boring, safety first option of Ross Lyon.

He did a decent job of rebuilding Brisbane from 2007-09 and again from 2011-2013 after he had put a wrecking ball through it to get Brendan Fevola in 2010. As I expected Clarko, Lyon and Sam Mitchell are the other names mentioned so far.
