I’m talking about old west westerns not films you think have a western vibe or any of that malarkey. Good rule of thumb, if it doesn’t have western tagged as a genre on IMDb then it does not count.
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Open range 3:10 to Yuma Slow West In a Valley of violence
honorable mention/ recommendation/ exception
The Dark Valley is excellent and it does have western next to it on IMDb. It is indeed set in the appropriate era but is also set in Austria rather than the old west of the USA. Damn good film.

Not much I'd rate higher than a solid 6/10, but these are all good value.
I'll try to stick to your rules - so no Hell or High Water, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada or The Tracker, which I would rate higher than most of those I list here.
True Grit Slow West Meek's Cutoff The Sisters Brothers Django Unchained
hm: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, 3:10 to Yuma, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs

Yeah django is more of a southern but QT calls it a western and it’s listed as a western 👍

Like most of Kelly Reichardt's films it's not completely successful, and somehow feels quite 'minor', but it's an enjoyable little movie with some interesting characters, very well-played.

I was never a big western fan, although I have a select few on dvd.
Of your pics, the only title I've seen is Open Range, which I quickly acquired. Duvall and Costner (not my favorite actor) are magic together and the final shootout is one of the best staged western gun battles I've ever seen. It may not be a classic on the level of Eastwood's Unforgiven, but it's certainly worth including in anyone's home library.

The remakes of True Grit and 3:10 to Yuma would definitely be on my list, and so would The Hateful Eight.
I haven’t seen many of the others mentioned so far, and those that I have seen (The Assassination of Jesse James, Buster Scruggs, Meek’s Cutoff) I didn’t think were all that great (not saying that I disliked them).
One that hasn’t been mentioned yet and that would definitely deserve a spot on my list is “The Salvation” (2014), a western from Denmark starring Mads Mikkelsen. It’s a Danish production with a Danish director and main actor, but it takes place in the old American West, so it qualifies. Mads Mikkelsen plays a Danish immigrant to the USA who, after many years, saves enough money to bring his family over - but as soon as they arrive there is an altercation with a criminal gang and all Hell breaks loose.

No Country For Old Men The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Django Unchained 3:10 to Yuma Looking at old west westerns Somebody previously mentioned Hell or High Water, which isn't an old west western. 3:10 to Yuma The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford Open Range I've seen a few more from this century, and I'm sure there are good ones I haven't seen yet, but these are the only ones I'd put in a top 5 at the moment.

They mentioned he’ll or high water as an example of something that’s not a western in the classic sense.. the op is pretty straight forward
