Had a debate with my friend the other day on who has the bigger mainstream appeal as of today? He is adamant that RDJ has more mainstream recognition because of the Marvel movies but Im still backing Tom Cruise as hes been a household name for over 3 decades wheras RDJ has only really been popular since 2008.
So who do you think right now is the more popular actor. Whose name and face will people from around the world recognize more?

Tom Cruise. He’s had a few disappointments like The Mummy reboot and Rock of Ages. But his track record is much better than RDJ, who I like but most of what he’s done outside of Iron Man hasn’t been great. Except for the Sherlock Holmes movies.

Tom Cruise, and by far if you take his whole career into account.

Poll results are what I'd expect. Cruise easily, anything RDJ does outside of the MCU in the last ten years is a bomb.

As much of a shithead as he seems to be, there's no denying Cruise is arguably the biggest star on the planet...and has been for a while.

Cruise easily. Downey is only successful in the MCU. Cruise turned movies like A Few Good Men, Jerry Maguire, and The Firm into blockbusters

Robert Downey Jr is an excellent actor, touched by his own brand of genius (Chaplin) but Tom Cruise (for all the brickbats thrown in his direction) has stood the test of several decades of exemplary work.

Ironic that Tom Cruise was considered for Iron Man at one time.

For those of a certain age, definitely Cruise. I can imagine that younger folks that haven’t looked much at Cruises back catalog would think the opposite especially if they are into MCU. Downey made some films in the 80s but he was a bit player in those days compared to the mighty one. 😀

But the wider global population would be more aware of Cruise.

I grew up during the Risky Business, Cocktail, Top Gun, Legend era so I remember just how huge Cruise was then (and how much the girls loved him). I wanted some Ray Bans like nobody's business. RDJ did some brat pack films and Rodney Dangerfield's Back to School but I always viewed him as a sort of B lister up until the last couple of decades. He's a very good actor, I just never viewed him in the same light as Cruise.

Today it’s Robert Downey Jr easily. Thanks almost entirely because of his casting as Iron Man in the MCU movies but he’s also been fairly active the past decade or so with the Sherlock movies and other hits like Tropic Thunder.
Cruise historically has him beat most likely. But I don’t think Cruise is as big a draw today as RDJ

But I don’t think Cruise is as big a draw today as RDJ Who knows what his career would have been like if he hadn't gotten in so much trouble in the 1990s. In and out of jail, drug addiction etc. Zodiac is really the movie that brought him back and then Iron Man led him on his way to late career superstardom. I was taking the whole career into account and I think that is what most people are doing. Tom Cruise is very well known by younger people still though, due to the hugely successful Mission: Impossible franchise. If not for that I would definitely say RDJ is more famous now.

RDJ doesn’t seem to be much of a draw outside of the MCU. Iron Man is bigger than any of the individual roles that Cruise has played, but that’s just one character.

Also, Iron Man is a spfx creation. It's not RDj in a costume. So the VFX provides at least some of the draw.
Cruise, while resembling a spfx creation at times--is still the main focus. For better or worse.
