If you're a Max von Sydow fan, you'll want to see this film. While in most of his better-known films in the past 30 years he is onscreen for just a few minutes, in this one he is onscreen almost every frame.
I don't tend to like films where they tell you what the ending will be at the beginning. I prefer the excitement of not knowing quite how things will turn out. Perhaps the filmmakers did not think that was possible with this film because the protagonist was a real person who I suppose is very famous in Sweden, where this film was produced. (It was Sweden's nominee for best foreign-language film in the 1982 Academy Awards.)
It's a story about the hubris of explorers, similar in that regard to films like The Red Tent (which was about Norwegians) and The Lost City of Z, and the tv miniseries The Terror.
Depressing.
