Dirk Bogarde plays Max, a Nazi officer who is living under an assumed alias in post-War Vienna. Charlotte Rampling plays Lucia, a former concentration camp prisoner who had an S&M relationship with him during her imprisonment and who meets him again while visiting Vienna from America with her husband. Some of Max's fellow officers are also in Vienna, and have been trying to destroy any remaining evidence (& permanently silence any remaining witnesses) that could be used in any trial against them, should any of them be caught. They won't like it to find out that Max and Lucia have rekindled their relationship.
A very ugly, depressing story & film. (It doesn't help that I have a hard time enjoying anything with Charlotte Rampling in it ever since I read her controversial remarks during an interview in 2016 in which she was asked about the diversity efforts in Hollywood & the AMPAS.)
4/10

I suppose I should mention that Michael Haneke's film The Piano Teacher was also a very dark and depressing film, as many of his films are, and also involved very emotionally fragile people involved in an S&M relationship, but it was extremely well-crafted work with top-notch acting & directing. I would rate that one very highly.
