Years before Bogie would obsess over strawberries as the captain of the Caine, or would fall in love with Katharine Hepburn on the African Queen, he played the second in command on merchant marine ships taking part in allied ship convoys carrying supplies from America to Russia through north Atlantic waters infested with Nazi U-boats. (Come to think of it, he had a fair number of other credits that also involved ships of some sort.)
Of the films with Bogart that I have seen, I he played the most uncynical, thoroughly decent and likeable character in this one.
Cast included Alan Hale (father to Gilligan's skipper, Alan Hale Jr), a good character actor here. Also Ruth Gordon(!), who I didn't recognize; I only see this after the fact, as I am looking at the credits online.
Some good sub scenes, although most of the story takes place on the big ships.
You can see some foreshadowing of Nazi deaths that Spielberg would use in Raiders of the Lost Ark in this film.
