I still prefer John Williams and Hans Zimmer but James Horner is up there for me. He's done some fantastic music. Some had already been mentioned but I like the work he's done for these movies as well:

A great composer, greatly missed. He did great work for Roger Corman. Yeah, his scores for Humanoids from the Deep (1980) and Battle Beyond the Stars were quality. Also enjoyed his work on other early 80s horror releases, such as The Hand (1981) and Wolfen (1981). Another one, which I have always liked very much, is the soundtrack for The Name of the Rose (1986).
