Modric is unhappy on '5 that he is stopped mid-flow in a danger area when the ball hits the ref and the ref blows up for a re-take. Modric wanted to carry on. From the retake the ball finds its way to Sterling who finds Foden on the right, he strikes and it beats Livakovic to rattle off the far post. Modric would have gone mad if that had gone in.

Well, on '25 it's all quite high tempo from England so far, quick passing, quick little white-socked legs dancing around the park while Croatia, playing a slower game, seems content to let them do it - for now.
Rob Smyth receives a kit-related email from the delightfully named Mary Waltz.

'35 and the zippy vim is dissipating from England's game as expected. Croatia has enjoyed great chunks of measured possession for the last ten minutes.

Ref Orsato blows up for the break. Gareth Southgate collects his jacket and scurries off.
Very pretty from England for the first 25 minutes but at half time it's like gazing at a poster of your favourite catwalk model for 2 hours and then crawling into your bed with just a hot water bottle for company. Nothing doing at 0-0.

There seems to be hardly anyone in the stands. Must be expensive or something.
Time to pick up the pace. Doesn't seem to be a lot of chemistry on the England squad yet.

Supposed to be 22,500 in attendance but all I can mainly see is empty red seats. They started off in a sprightly fashion, quick passing but as it wore on you began to think, wait they're just passing it very quickly to the nearest player without pausing and thinking what are the options. It was very automated. By half-hour you're thinking, very pretty and what's Plan B?

GOAL '57
From the pace of a snail, the game bursts into life as Phillips streaks forward and outfoxes two defenders, passes one into the path of the onrushing Sterling who just about manages to slide it past Livakovic for one-nothing.

There's chemistry now. Some nice passes on the way to Sterling's goal. His shot was helped by a handball by a Croatian defender, threw the keeper off.
And immediately the whole game seems to open up.
Harry Kane just cracked his head on a side post. He's ok now.

Croatia trying to string something together as they now bring on Petkovic for the last 12 or 15 minutes. They're playing with an extra man up front now and demanding most of the possession - which is useless without a goal.
Who's this? Young Jude Bellingham is coming on for England! And Harold Kane looks more than a little miffed at being sacrificed. There is no earthly way he can feel hard done by on today's performance.

4 minutes of added time and Croatia has to step up the urgency in what little time it has.

It's all over. Disappointing from Croatia who showed us little in the way of creativity, it has to be said. After falling into a lull for the middle third of the game, England regrouped after the goal and was never really in any serious danger of losing its lead.

Hard to believe this was England's first victory in the first round of the Euros.
Could have used a second goal but overall a good win.

Strong showing at home from England as you'd expect. Croatia looked slow and sluggish in the sun. Best team won.
