Beautiful, wonderful Amsterdam...Me again. Where is everyone today? Johan Cruyff Arena. I am not a big fan of naming buildings after people who are still alive, but I will make an exception in this case and say that I approve of this choice of name.

Sorry to break the news, Cruyff is actually dead.
Anyways, was impressed with Ukraine in qualifying, deservedly topped the group, and hoping there is a shoot in sight policy in regards to wonderful left foot Ruslan Malinovskyi.

The ref, Dr Felix Brych from Germany, blows up and Netherlands get us underway in an already noisy atmosphere.

It takes Memphis Depay about 92 seconds to collect the ball in his own half, streak through the Ukraine half and two defenders, and fire low and hard from the edge of the box, saved by Bushchan.

Wijnaldum on '8 is the latest to have a crack and meets the low cross and fires a foot over the bar from 12 or 14 yards. I can't keep up with the Dutch pressure.

An early swap as Marlos replaces the injured Zubkov as Ukraine - who have been just as attack-minded as the Dutch, you have to say - launch another foray into the opposition's first-third. It comes to nothing this time.

You wonder which will have the highest count by the end of the game - goals or cards shown. It's zero on both counts at '27.
Here's Depay streaking into the area, big chance, feeds Weghorst but that's a superb smothering save by Bushchan who blocked Weghorst at close range on '28. It's ridiculously end-to-end stuff. Now Yarmalenko has an angled crack on goal from outside the area but Stekelenburg is safely behind it and captures with ease.

Bushchan makes a great save from Wijnaldum's fierce drive from 18 yards. The ball is traveling. Bushchan's body goes one way, his left arm somehow goes the other and the ball nearly dislocates his wrist as he somehow palms it away. Look at the impact the ball has on his hand, forcing it back. That was even better than Dimitrievski's flying one-hander for North Macedonia earlier.
Dumfries for Netherlands now with a free header in acres of space yards from goal, keeper nowhere. He sends it wide. He sends it wide.

Dr Brych has blown up and the teams go off for the interval. Somehow the game is goalless.

GOAL
Seven minutes into the 2nd half Dumfries tears down the right, sends a ball in, Bushchan spills it and Wijnaldum is on hand to power it home for one-nothing Netherlands.

Was all the big teams getting to play all their games in their home stadiums - in front of their own fans - always the plan or was this idea extended post covid?

GOAL
Weghorst finishes off an assault which originated down the right again.
VAR Checking for an offside on Dumfries, is it?
GOAL AWARDED
Was Dumfries offside or interfering with the keeper? You can't see what it is they are reviewing in Switzerland. Whatever, the goal is given for 2-0 Netherlands before the hour mark.

Not sure but Ireland had to pull out because of Covid restrictions for spectators not guaranteed to be allowed to attend. I think it's much as originally scheduled. Luka Modric was complaining a few days ago that England had home advantage v Croatia and I think he made a damn good point.

The commentator just made a point there that Belgium have to play two of their games away so doesn't look like it's 100% across the board for the top seeds.
Doesn't seem right to me the likes of England and Holland getting to play all their games at home. Maybe if all the qualifying group winners got that as well it's not quite as bad but there's a real question of fairness as it stands.

A rare opportunity for Ukriane as Yremechuk fires from outside the area but the keeper doesn't have to move to capture it on '72.

GOAL
Fantastic strike from Yarmolenko on '75. It curled just enough and rose just enough to find its unstoppable way into the roof of the Dutch net, keeper flying in vain. It's 2-1.
