What a fantastic actor. Sure, everyone remembers Deliverance, but he’s been great in everything he’s done. As a kid I first saw him in Superman and have loved him ever since. Rest in peace Ned, I hope you made it to Otisberg.

To add to Deliverance and Superman I'll also mention that he was great in Network, Charlie Wilson's War, Rudy and most recently Toy Story 3, among many others. He worked a lot and was in a lot of mediocre movies too, but he was always good in whatever he was doing.

Must have been tough for him. I can imagine everyone seeing him and yelling “squeal like a pig”

Really liked him. Nashville, Big Easy, Deliverance, other films. Zero recollection of him in Superman.

He said many times how he regretted playing that role in Deliverance because every day of his life someone made a "squeal like a pig" reference to him.

I mean to this day Sharon Stone rails against that scene in Basic Instinct but here I am almost 30 years after that movie and still talking about her. Her only role of note before that was Total Recall and while I liked her in that she wouldn’t have gotten all that famous on just that. And no, I’m not saying actresses need to show the beaver just to get a break in Hollywood, I’m saying don’t knock the early roles that launch you into the pop culture zeitgeist. I don’t hear Ving Rhames trashing that scene in Pulp Fiction....

If somebody is going to a Don McLean concert, they probably want him to play "American Pie" and not some deep track on his fourth album from the 80s.

His performance here makes me think how he could have played Del Griffith in 'Planes, Trains And Automobiles' (1987) had it been made 10 years earlier.
R.I.P.
