Released in the US June 1981 after an earlier release in Europe. There’s the inevitable discussion of switching Dicks - Lester taking over for Donner, who already shot much of the movie. If Donner actually completed it, would have something special. What we got instead is still an entertaining movie, especially when Superman faces the trio of villains in Metropolis. As mentioned before, I’d love to see a version that combines the best elements of both versions (the Brando footage Is invaluable). Ever notice there is a framed picture of Bill Cosby in The Daily Planet offices? After this, it was way downhill for the series.

One of the two good Superman movies. I don’t understand why it’s so difficult to make a great Superman movie. For such an iconic character, his movie track record isn’t super.

I was traumatized seeing Superman on a bender in Superman 3. As far as 2 goes, I will always love it, but how our hero was able to walk home from the fortress if solitude remains one of the great unanswered questions in pop culture.

Or Clark not freezing to death when he has to walk back in hopes of getting his power again.

Do you guys prefer the Donner cut or Lester cut? The ideal version of the movie would be a mix of the best parts of both.

It's because they can't do a heroic adventure movie. Even though he's an alien-he still looks like a whitey guy and politics come into it all the time. I am amazed Cannon could do a He-Man movie where there's not much extra to it--between him and Skeletor.
The logical thing would be to approach the plot like an episode of a cartoon show--but they don't, because with that level of money and distribution comes a much greater amount of political scrutiny. They swarm around it.
The 1941 Captain Marvel serial was supposed to be a Superman one originally. It's pretty much a straight adventure story.
Look at Marvel now--they've turned into a nebbish comedy.
And yet, way back in the 80s, someone could make a woman warrior movie and cast someone who would be considered the right type for such a role.
They won't do it now. They pick an Ally McBeal nerd type for it.

A mix of the two versions. I dont like all of the Donner version. I think the mother scene in the Lester version is better than the Brando one with the floating head.

Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
Superman II (1981) - 3 out of 4 stars
"Screw the Superman legend, forget logic, and full speed ahead: that's the attitude of this flashy sequel, wherein three villains from Krypton, which powers just like Superman's threaten the earth--while Lois Lane and the Man of Steel fall in love. Full of great effects and entertainingly played, but lacking the sense of awe and wonder of the original film, adding cruelty and violence instead. Released in Europe in 1980. In 2006, Richard Donner supervised a recut, using footage he shot before the producers replaced him with Lester. Overall story is the same, but there are many different scenes, including some with Brando. The tone of this version is at once less comic and more epic. Panavision."

It feels more closely aligned with the 1978 film, tonally as well as a result of the inclusion of Jor-El. Less jokey. Undoubtedly the greatest Director's Cut I've ever encountered.

You actually mean ‘Superman II at 40 (US release).’ It already was released the previous year.

I like how superman 3 gave little kids nightmares from the Richard Pryor turning into a robot scene, the horror of which derived more from bad special effects than anything else.

Richard Pryor didn’t get cyberized. It was Vera Webster. I will admit the scene of her robotic blank eye opening was scary to my 5 year old self.

Do you guys prefer the Donner cut or Lester cut? The ideal version of the movie would be a mix of the best parts of both. I mostly prefer the Donner cut. It's more faithful in tone to the first Superman film and excises a lot of comedic filler that Richard Lester had shot. Still, I don't like the ending where Clark beats up Rocky at the diner after he had reversed time again. You actually mean ‘Superman II at 40 (US release).’ It already was released the previous year. Why the delay? I was under the impression movies used to be released in the US before they came out overseas. The New York Times had this to say:

Richard Pryor praised Superman 2 in this Tonight Show interview.
I wonder if that is why they approached him to do Superman 3. He gave it a free plug.
