I see spam has pride of place on my local supermarket shelves. Why?
Shouldn't it be in the cat food aisle?
I have heard of people who eat the stuff and even have recipes to make it marginally edible, so I bought a can. Pretty expensive, double the price of corned beef (i tried that a while ago and it and I couldn't understand why anybody would eat it in favour of real corned beef) and slightly dearer than canned ham.
Wha? It tastes like poor quality ham mixed with flour, quite bland and with a disgusting pasty texture.
Am I missing something? Is spam the food of the gods and I just don't know how to prepare it, or don't appreciate it?

I never liked SPAM. When WKD and I were in Hawaii (getting married) I noticed that SPAM was very popular and on the menu of many local restaurants. I guess it became popular during WW2 due to the shortage of meat. I do keep a can of corned beef on hand for my hurricane supplies. When I use it up every few months, I make a hash with potatoes, sweet onions, butter and corned beef (Betty Crocker recipe) and it tastes pretty good, not something I would eat all the time but once in a while is ok. I noticed that SPAM is getting popular again , i.e. Spam tacos so that's probably why its getting expensive for what it is. It's looks like it just gelatin and fat. Some people love it. Its too fat and greasy for me.

I cook "real" corned beef in the crock pot with cabbage, onions and beer. I haven't made it in a long time - on St. Pat's day we now have Colcannon. I've read several places that the typical corned beef & cabbage dish is an Irish-American dish.

It's very popular in Hawaii. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

I don't eat as much of it now because it's very salty, but I just cut into slices and fry on a pan. On the side along with eggs or in a sandwich.

Maybe that's why corned beef and cabbage or cauliflower is a staple here. Corn beef sandwiches for a week.

I liked Spam sandwiches, when I was a kid. I had very sophisticated taste ... white bread, and yellow mustard. A few years ago, I made one for "old times' sake." It was revoltingly salty! I tried the low sodium Spam, and it didn't have much flavor. Now, when I think of Spam, I think of Monty Python.
