Would you watch this?
I suppose the dynamic would have to change a bit since a robot obviously wouldn't have another planet to return to, unless of course it's sort of alien robot.

The movie "Short Circuit" is technically E.T. but with a robot instead of an alien.

The movie "Short Circuit" is technically E.T. but with a robot instead of an alien. Its sequel Short Circuit 2 ends with the robot "Johnny 5" being sworn in as an American citizen - which, incidentally, is also the ending of the infamous E.T. ripoff Mac & Me where the aliens are sworn in as American citizens.

There's also Batteries Not Included among others mentioned. It has alien robots powered by batteries.
