It's been badly needed. The last time TCM ran it, it looked ghastly. Although my personal affection for the film is minimal, it's an important one, being the first in a narrative rather than travelogue or documentary form produced in the three-negative Cinerama process.
One can hope this resto will look as spectacular as that done for How the West Was Won. My appreciation for that film isn't all that much greater than for TWWOTBG, but on my last viewing, the stunning HD image quality (from which the troublesome join lines of the three panels had been virtually eliminated) made every minute of it enjoyable, I daresay more so than my only theatrical viewing in a Cinerama venue back in '63.
There has been more than one occasion when a film about which I'm otherwise ho-hum has delighted me with a dazzling restoration. Makes it a whole different experience.
