Interesting first round with a few favourites all but playing themselves out of it. Jordan Spieth had a 76. Justin Rose a 77, Web Simpson a 79. Lefty and Morikawa both handed in 4 over 75s, as did Canadian Corey Connors. Viktor Hovland had a 74, ditto for Zalatoris. New South African star Garrick Higgo finished with 76. Former champion Martin Kaymer also had a 76. Koeptka and Rory and Matthew Wolff threatened briefly to run away with it but came back to the pack. Nice to see both Molinari brothers under par and Scotland's Robert Macintyre had a steady opening par of 71

Fascinating last day leaderboard with the winner likely to come from the top 6, with Rory and DeShambles obvious favourites. But I fancy Louis the South African. He always seems to be thereabouts on the last day without ever winning. It may be the knowledge that he will undoubtedly get a half-hour phone call from Mr.South Africa, that holds him back but cell phones have been known to be dropped, from time to time. Go for it Louis

Congrats to Jon Rahm. He WON the US Open while many were losing it. That back 9 sorted out the boys from the men and he was the only one to take it on and win. It looked as though Louis' play-safe tactics were going to prevail until Rahm's more aggressive and daring finish won the day. Just as his hero, Seve would have played it.
