Shady! What’s up man? To add to the thread, I’d say The Godfather: Part II. No one seems to ever acknowledge how depressing and dark this movie is. It has like 20 different devastating gut punches in it.

The cliche answer is usually something like Schindler’s List, which makes sense, since it’s about the Holocaust, but are there any better examples that anyone here can think of? Frances (1982) The Killing Fields (1984) The House of Sand and Fog (2003)

Lilya 4-ever.
A modern example of a really depressing Swedish film. Pretty much based on a real story/tragedy.
The Last Emperor.
Puyi really couldn't catch a break, lurching against his will from one prison (the gilded cage of royalty) to another (head of a Japanese puppet state, and then as a political prisoner of communist China) his entire life.
The Blue Kite.
Follows the increasingly miserable lives of a family during the rise of communism in China.
Au Hasard Balthazar.
The life story of an abused girl and her pet donkey.

There are no depressing films- only people who draw depressing conclusions from them. I have seen many films that depressed me the first time but not when I viewed it again under a different mindset. It was always me that created the depression.
That said, there is a film I have not seen again that I definitely felt depressed after the first viewing- 'night mother (1986). It's about an inept mom's attempt to stop her daughter from committing suicide.

Just about anything Rainer Werner Fassbinder ever had a hand in is bound to be a bummer.

Just about anything Rainer Werner Fassbinder ever had a hand in is bound to be a bummer. Veronika Voss was a real downer for sure.
