Ok, so I finally saw this. Honestly, it wasn't nearly as bad as its reputation but I can see why it disappointed a lot of people. There's just this dour, joyless quality to it throughout that I think puts a damper on the whole thing. Also I wish the meeting between Slater and Schwarzenegger had been handled a bit better, a lot of the movie seems to be building towards it, then it happens and it's just kind of an anti-climatic throwaway scene. And it's way too long for its own good, I think it should have been an hour and a half maybe, but at two hours and ten minutes, it the novelty sort of wears off by the end.
Having said all that, I sill enjoyed a lot of it, Schwarzenegger gives a genuinely good performance and that action trope parodies are spot-on.

Such an underrated movie and Arnold gives an inspired performance. It's a brillant send up to action movies. Charles Dance as the disgruntled henchman Benedict who takes over Vivaldi's empire. F.Murray Abraham is not to be trusted because he killed Mozart lol.
I love this teaser:

Arnie was aware that the main competition was Jurassic Park. He mentioned it when they were filming the dinosaur pit sequence. They commit the terrible sin of telling instead of showing because Charles Dance said he had assembled all these movie bad guys to fight him--he mentioned King Kong among them. That's where they screwed up because it could have used some whizbang. That awful cartoon Devito character and the clumsy way they brought in a digital Bogart--they even had to say "Humphrey Bogart" so they would know it was him.
I think they were partially inspired by Roger Rabbit--that was the gist of it. I think they oversold Arnie's popularity with this film. If you look at the ones he was most famous for, they were usually ones where FX was involved. The Terminator, Predator, Total Recall...

Yeah, I definitely noticed the Roger Rabbit influences, I thought much of it seemed inspired by Back to the Future as well.

It’s actually quite entertaining and clever. Not as bad as its reputation made it out to be.

Can you do me a favor and just knock it off with that shit? I just saw the movie and I wanted to share my thoughts on it, I'm not gonna go pawing around looking for old threads on it.

I think it is a fun, creative and funny parody of the action genre. It is far from perfect, but it is very entertaining throughout. I have watched the movie many times. The villains are very memorable and well acted. Charles Dance with the different glass eyes he wears and Tom Noonan as The Ripper are both very menacing. It also has one of my favorite character entrances of all time, with Jack Slater walking on top of all the cop cars.
"It is a beautiful day and we are out killing drug dealers."
7/10

When I first saw it I didn’t get that it was actually supposed to be a parody on Arnold’s action movie career. The only thing I got from it originally was it was an action movie spoof. The idea works in places, but it really is very disjointed at some parts. At one point it’s a kids fantasy movie next it’s a drama then it’s an action movie with kid fantasy movie elements and then it becomes a drama again. It tried to be a mix of too many things when it should have stuck to one. I swear at one point too the movie takes itself seriously which took the fun out for me.
This really just needed better writers. They had the right idea, but didn’t do as nearly as good of a job as they thought and I think Arnold saw this as his first failure which didn’t help matters either. I feel if they remake this it could be done much better today. NOT SAYING THEY SHOULD!!!
6/10.

I can totally see where you are coming from and I agree it is somewhat disjointed, but I think it mostly balances everything well. I will sometimes give a movie a pass just for the idea, as long as I find the whole movie entertaining. I have similar issues with Demolition Man, but I don't think that movie is as much fun. I rate both the same though. Both have strengths and weaknesses that the other doesn't have.
