Made in the hay day of 007 films, when scenery was grand and adventure grander, this one still holds up as one of the five best 007 films ever made. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME gets the nod from almost any list of critics as the very best, of course, and this one is "right there".
We have gorgeous women, maybe the most gorgeous leading Bond lady (at least from a "guy" point of view), we have some of the most exotic and beautiful scenery of any 007 film, with the Greek atmosphere running through it, we have gadgets, we have high adventure, we have mountains, oceans, snow, underwater action, hills, ancient ruins, jungles, about everything but "outer space".
It has the Bond wit and the Bond heroics.
It has ALL the elements of a super 007 film except Outer Space, in fact. We even have horses. That, in itself, puts it way above the 007 "pretender" movies.
At the time, it was heralded as a "darker Bond" because of the revenge killing of an evil henchman, but that really wasn't so out of the ordinary at any time in any previous movie. Bond still remains a pretty good guy. Just a bit of "anti hero" in that he doesn't necessarily give an evil enemy a fair duel. He's actually more of an anti hero than any of Leone's Western classic Greek heroes.
40 years later, it still is the second best 007 film ever made. And now, since no serious objections have been made before this being notarized and set in stone, it is OFFICIAL.
FOR YOUR EYES ONLY 9/10

Definitely not the worst of the series but not particularly memorable, either. Hell, I had more fun with Moonraker.
My top 5 - Casino Royale (2006) From Russia with Love Goldfinger The Spy who Loved Me Goldeneye

Great one, probably my second or third favorite all time Bond films. I still remember that little Citroen 2CV plunging down the olive groves (?) with the bad guys in the Peugeot. I think Bond comments about the car in a typical witty way. Moore proves once again his range as an actor. Brutally serious at times and still capable of making the audience laugh at others. Outside of perhaps Connery, Moore definitely was the actor's actor.

I plan to finally watch this soon. I have watched the opening a million times but never went beyond the start and title song.

I didn't hate it. I'm not in love with it. It's a competent film. And after Moonraker that's all it had to be. lol. Just kidding, i think it's pretty good.

Leonard Maltin Movie Guide Review:
For Your Eyes Only (1981) - 3 out of 4 stars
"After years of space-age gadgetry, cartoon villains, female mannequins, and giants with steel teeth came this one-shot return to the old days of Ian Flemming minimalism. No other James Bond film has provoked so much debate among 007 fans (even us); judge for yourself. The chases and stuntwork are spectacular; debuting helmer Glen directed 2nd-unit on some earlier Bonds. Look for Charles Dance as a gunman. Panavision."

It's my favorite Roger Moore Bond film after The Spy Who Loved Me. As for the opening, it's silly, but it sets up the revenge theme later on. Also, you would think Bond would be more angrier at "Blofeld" for having killed his wife. At least I'm glad they resolved Tracy's murder going unpunished after bungling it in Diamonds Are Forever.
The title song by Sheena Easton is one of my favorites. Aristotle Kristatos certainly won't rank high on anyone's list for favorite Bond villains, but the type of story they were going for didn't require a megalomaniac villain. Columbo was a very good Bond ally. Still, there were some cringy humor scenes with Bibi and Margaret and Denis Thatcher.

For Your Eyes Only (1981), directed by John Glen. The Brits have lost a code machine and Bond has to recover it from a sunken ship before the Russians get it and turn all those missiles around. We forget about that for most of the first half. It has a fine beginning moment, with Bond visiting his wife's grave. (Did you forget he was married for a few hours in On Her Majesty's Secret Service (1969)?) Then we have a silly segment disposing of Blofeld; his final appearance in the series, not counting Never Say Never Again (1983). Then it's escapades in various Euro resort areas, with a Winter Olympic theme. The second half improves with lovely underwater photography and combat scenes, and some really fine technical climbing stunts. But I don't know why Mr Big didn't pick up the code machine from the wreck: he was parked above it and had all the deep diving gear. Or how our heroes manage a sneak attack on the villains' base in a boat with tall sails. This one gets credit for being less gimmicky and comical than other then-recent entries in the series, but it's still Roger Moore. He has his defenders but they are a minority of Bond fans. I have nothing against him, but he does seem to coast through the movies. He's ok at the wry and comical aspects, but we hardly ever see from him the passion, hardness and violence the character requires. This film has one exception: the bit where he kicks the car over the cliff. But apparently Moore didn't like that type of scene. Girly theme song, and the action score is the peppy, funky film music popular at the time. Bond Girl fatality rate: 33%. Available on Blu-ray.

Bond Girl fatality rate: 33%. I've never seen that type of statistic before. Is it based on 1 of 3 women he has some sort of romantic dalliance with dying (the heroine, the skater, and the countess)? Or is based on 2 of 6 major female players dying (adding on Moneypenny, the heroine's mother, and the skater's mentor)?

I meant it in the sense the wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bond_girl) defines Bond Girl: "a character who is a love interest or female companion of James Bond".
Octopussy (1983) has a 100% Bond Girl survival rate.
