1996. A Disney animated film with a darker than usual tone. The film was considered a mild disappointment critically and financially when it came out but it seems to have gained more appreciation over the years  |

This movie is still heads and shoulders over most animated films today. Beautiful animation, compelling characters, a chilling cathedral and Broadway musical score - it's the jack of all trades. It would have been better if the mood were more consistent; the gargoyles' slapstick humor were a far cry from the heavy mature themes. Other than that, The New York Times has an interesting article about how the film earned a G rating in spite of the adult themes. |

My favorite Disney Renaissance film. I think Frollo is by far the most evil of any Disney villain.

Such a great undderated film, so much dark mature subject matter for a Disney film (religious persecution, infanticide, genocide, damnation, and even implied rape).
