People generally fall into two camps regarding Logan's continuity:
1. It's part of the DoFP continuity. 2. It's just a standalone movie that acts as more of a "true story" set apart from the "fictionalized stories" that we saw in the other movies.
I understand that James Mangold has paid lip-service to the idea of Option 1, but Jackman himself kinda contradicted that. Plus, the movie itself brings up further continuity issues (such as Caliban not really aging and having completely new accent when compared to his appearance in Apocalypse, and the fact that we saw young mutants in the future ending of DoFP when Logan tries to tell us that no mutants have been born in 25 years). So I tend to agree with Option 2.
What say you?

I think it's kinda universal movie. It feels like you can lead up to it and not really tied down.

That was addressed in the OP. There are problems with accepting what he said at face-value. He could have just been trying to get people to not ask too many questions (since Fox is known for having continuity issues). I honestly feel like he was saying, "Yeah, I guess it's in the same timeline or whatever," without actually thinking about if it lined up or not (because it doesn't really).

Finally, I agree with ThatGuy. I think Logan is more universal because its main focus is on exposing the humanity of these superheroes like never before.

Logan lines up with all of it and none of it at the same time. I mean, he even has the katana from The Wolverine.
On the old IMDB boards, some of us thought of the ending of DoFP as their heaven. They all died and showed up at their safe place, Xavier's School. That's why it had a hazy look to it. It's also why Mystique, Magneto, Bishop, Blink, Sunspot and Warpath weren't there. They weren't from that school. That was for the people from the OT timeline.
I think Logan could be a part of the past part of DoFP. The guy in Logan is the guy that was running away from Weapon X in Apocalypse. But like I said before, It can also link up with The Wolverine.

It's an interesting take. But I think the movie itself implies that it's just the updated future (since it ends with Xavier about to give Logan the updated history lesson). The major continuity issues that Logan has with DoFP and Apocalypse are that there are YOUNG mutants at the end of DoFP (which contradicts Logan's claim that no mutants have been born in 25 years) and that Caliban hasn't aged like even 5 years since 1983 (in Apocalypse). Also, his accent completely changed. It's hard to reconcile those issues. That's why I think it's more likely that Logan simply takes place in a more "realistic" version of the X-Men Universe. All the other stories could have happened (and some of them are either directly or indirectly referenced), but they didn't necessarily play out EXACTLY like how we saw them play out in the movies that we actually saw. Those movies were more or less like the comic books that Logan dismisses as fictionalized versions of what "really" happened.

Xavier had plans to make it a regular school in Apocalypse. We know for a fact that at least one of them was. He was the exact same mutant that we saw get killed at the beginning of DoFP in the dystopian future. And there's still the issues surrounding Caliban... Furthermore, Logan itself tells us that Xavier was only responsible for a FEW deaths. The radio broadcast states that 6 (I believe) X-Men died because of Xavier's seizure. That says nothing about all the other mutants that would still be out there in the world. How did they die off?

And Logan (the movie) says that pretty much all the mutants are dead. You hear it on the radio towards the beginning of the film.

The kid that played him looks exactly like that in real life. There wasn't any make-up on him. No, it doesn't. It says that mutants are not being born.

if the age thing is a real sticking point for you i wouldn't recommend trying to make any sense of the X-Men films continuity-wise.

Those movies were more or less like the comic books that Logan dismisses as fictionalized versions of what "really" happened. The only continuity issue with Logan and DoFP is only that future part at the end. Caliban's accent doesn't really mean anything since the Xaviers and the Eriks don't have the same accent. The only thing is his speech patterns. He started talking regularly in Logan (was talking in 3rd person in Apocalypse). His age doesn't matter either since they expanded on his mutation in Logan. With his skin condition making him allergic to the sun, you can say he has a form of vampirism. That can explain his age. I'm digging what you're planting. What if... What if the movies besides Logan are live action adaptions of those comic books. Think of it like Fox Force Five in Pulp Fiction became the movie Kill Bill. We saw a movie that was in the Pulp Fiction universe. What if those X-men movies were movies based on the X-men in the Logan universe. Like Logan could have gone to see all those movies.
