2001 Spielberg taking on a story developed by Stanley Kubrick. The film got decent reviews but a mixed response from audiences though there are many who feel it is an overlooked gem in Spielberg's filmography

One of only a few Spielberg films that I haven't seen, along with that Tintin animated thing he did. I don't know, for whatever reason I could just never bring myself to watch AI.

I really liked it. I consider one of Spielberg's darkest and thought-provoking films.

It's interesting how he tried to emulate Kubrick's style. The worst thing was the celebrity cameos--Robin Williams and Chris Rock. It's not an upbeat story. The Twilight Zone "I Sing the Body Electric" is similar but it's short. The ending suggests
we identify with this artificial lifeform who finds some acceptance thanks to these faerie aliens yet we as the viewer know that this is artificial. It's not his mother or is it? It's just so weird and out there as a concept.

A very personal and downright sad movie, Haley Joel Osment and Jude Law are fantastic and Spielberg's directing is of course good and the stylistic references to Kubrick are noticeable and nice but the movie ultimately feels off most of the time and doesn't gel as well as it should have.
What is interesting is that the ending that Kubrick wanted to have was more in line what Spielberg is known for, and the ending Spielberg went with was the sort of ending Kubrick normally would have gone for.

I liked it the first time I saw it, but liked it a lot more when I rewatched it 2 years ago. It made a big jump in my Spielberg rankings.

I watched with then wife on video when first released. Good visual movie but I don't remember too much but could never watch again (like Sophie's Choice).. as I sobbed uncontrollably at the end, a few of the issues of loss too close to home.
