Another contemporary gem in which the real antagonist is modern life. Kirk Douglas' favorite of all his roles, it's a truly memorable viewing experience.

That brings to mind The Beast of Hollow Mountain and The Seven Faces of Dr. Lao. The combination of disparate genres doesn't always work, particularly the former. Tony Randall should have been nominated for an Oscar as Dr. Lao. Having sat through it, I much preferred Gwangi.

The Searchers. There is no good guys in white hats and bad guys in black hats. And not a straightforward story telling. You can miss a lot of things if you don't pay attention. Ethan and Martha's relationship is just one example.

Good choice, Good Man. I absolutely agree. And I would add this one, which turns the White Soldier and the Native American relationship on its head in a meaningful way.

Dances with Wolves is an example of the "rehabilitation" of the natives in movies. One that predated DWW was Jeremiah Johnson, a very underrated western. That was another thing you could miss in The Searchers. Scar's band had been treated as badly as Scar treated the white men.
More examples of a westerns that broke new ground
The Ox-Bow Incident. It turned the stereotypical western "you make law and order even where it doesn't exist" on it's head
High Noon. some call it the first "adult western". The hero in a western was never supposed to be scared. Will Kane was
