“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” — the highly anticipated sequel to the Oscar-winning, billion-dollar blockbuster “Black Panther” — started production on Tuesday at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige tells Variety. Director Ryan Coogler is returning to direct from his screenplay, and Feige says that everyone from the original cast is also coming back — without, of course, star Chadwick Boseman, who died in August 2020 after a four year battle with colon cancer. “It’s clearly very emotional without Chad,” Feige said before the “Black Widow” Global Fan Event in Los Angeles on Tuesday night. “But everyone is also very excited to bring the world of Wakanda back to the public and back to the fans. We’re going to do it in a way that would make Chad proud.” Plot details remain under wraps, and Feige did not say which specific actors would be returning. But Danai Gurira, Letitia Wright, Daniel Kaluuya, Winston Duke, Lupita Nyong’o, Florence Kasumba, and Angela Bassett would all likely reprise their roles from the original film. (A representative for Marvel Studios said there was no further update.) “Black Panther” was a cultural sensation when it opened in February 2018, shattering the pernicious Hollywood myth that movies with a predominantly Black cast could not be commercially viable internationally. Instead, the film earned $1.34 billion worldwide, making “Black Panther” Marvel’s highest grossing non-“Avengers” movie of all time. The film earned seven Academy Award nominations, including for best picture (the first superhero movie ever recognized in that category), and it won Oscars for score, costume design and production design. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” is set to debut on July 8, 2022. It’s one of 26 upcoming titles on Marvel Studios’ slate for theatrical release and streaming on Disney Plus, including a TV series set within the world of Wakanda that is part of a multi-year overall television deal Coogler and his Proximity Media signed with The Walt Disney Company in February. “We are especially excited that we will be taking our first leap with Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso and their partners at Marvel Studios where we will be working closely with them on select MCU shows for Disney Plus,” Coogler said at the time of the deal. “We’re already in the mix on some projects that we can’t wait to share.” variety.com/2021/film/news/black-panther-wakanda-forever-production-atlanta-cast-1235008191/

That's a shame they should've ended it after first movie. I'm not interested in a two hour Twitter pacify sequel.

Wasn't Wakanda Forever an internet meme? A mocking thing? And they are using it as a title now...

I still would have preferred that they simply recast T'Challa... but oh well. I'll still check out this movie but can't say I'm that interested in it without T'Challa.

Bear in mind this hasn't been confirmed yet: "Both Wakanda and Atlantis are hidden civilizations with advanced technology and increased militaristic abilities that decided to separate themselves from the rest of the world for their own safety, and in a way, out of fear. Wakanda feared that their technology would be abused. Atlantis feared that surface dwellers would come and desecrate the mythical city just as they did so many years ago. And yet their fears escalate even further when these two once-hidden nations clash with each other. Wakanda and Atlantis have a shockingly intertwined history. Wakanda is the only county in the world with access to vibranium. However, rumors of its power spread throughout the world, and Namor's human father was sent searching for this rare material in Antartica..." movieweb.com/black-panther-2-logline-atlantis-war-namor/

There have been so many rumors about Namor being in this movie that at this point, I’m just going to assume he will be. If he is, then I will say that it’s a little funny when you think about it. Namor predates Aquaman in the comics, yet DC got the jump on Marvel by depicting Aquaman in their movies first. Meanwhile, the Justice League and Darkseid came before the Avengers and Thanos, yet Marvel were the ones who got the jump on DC in that regard.

The film has gone through at least five scripts, according to Angela Bassett.

This will always be a “what could have been” type of movie for me. I would’ve been so excited for it if Chadwick was still with us. But now… I honestly don’t see the point of making it.

Unless they did a recast which initially I was strongly against. But now I've come to feel that it is what it is and Disney couldn't had anticipated that unfortunate turn of events.

Yeah, I would’ve supported a 2-4 year delay and then a recast. It was the way to go.

Yeah, I would’ve supported a 2-4 year delay and then a recast. It was the way to go. Indeed but Disney has this weird phobia of missing deadlines (barring the pandemic). Very true. And it’s odd that more people didn’t see that cold hearted cynicism at work. The lack of recast was likely more about keeping this date than anything else.
