Meet Joe Black (1998) has a higher rating on IMDB than Death Takes a Holiday (1934).
I don't have a big complaint about that, but I am very surprised.
For those unfamiliar, Meet Joe Black and Death Takes a Holiday are based on the same play and follow the same basic story, but Meet Joe Black has much more to it than Death Takes a Holiday. It is almost 2 hours longer.

Meet Joe Black was a good picture, it just needed to be an hour shorter. Never saw the original.

The Thing has a higher rating than Thing from Another World. That wasn't my point. Meet Joe Black does not have The Thing status. I guess I just assumed the 1934 movie was more liked than it actually is. It would be like me finding out that Body Snatchers (1993) has a higher rating than the 1956 movie.

Meet Joe Black was a good picture, it just needed to be an hour shorter. Never saw the original. It is worth watching just for Fredric March's performance. I like them about the same, but Fredric March is much more effective as the character than Brad Pitt. Meet Joe Black is more of a cutesy movie than the original.

No problem. Both are worth watching and the 1934 movie is only 77 minutes. Meet Joe Black on the other hand is 3 hrs.

Meet Joe Black is worth seeing for the following 26 seconds: That is all. I actually find that scene somewhat intense, not funny the way many people do. This was back when random stuff was cgi just for the sake of it in movies that it doesn't belong in. Remember Fight Club? It is brilliant cgi in the case of Fight Club and it was experimental, but a lot of it is so unnecessary regardless.

Meet Joe Black was awful. That movie had literally ONLY two things going for it.
1) Brad Pitt looks like a young god in that movie.
2) The trailer for Star Wars: the Phantom Menace played ahead of it.
That's it. Its awful. Even if Anthony Hopkins started eating people that couldn't save it.
And speaking of remakes, Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter reminds me that Michael Mann's Manhunter is superior to Brett Ratners Red Dragon, even though Red Dragon has the superior cast. Sadly, wasted on a hack director.

There seems to be an increasing preference for Philip Kaufman's 1978 Invasion of the Body Snatchers over Siegel's original. I like both, but the remake will always be my second choice.

"Meet Joe Black" is much more recent, has a still popular movie star at the head, and today's raters at the database only know new movies, not classic era. That explains the higher rating of the lesser of the two movies. It also explains the higher rating of Carpenter's "The Thing" over the older but much more accomplished "The Thing From Another World."

The Thing, The Fly, Invasion of the Body Snatchers are the exceptions. Here Comes Mr. Jordan on the other hand has a 7.6/10, while Heaven Can Wait has a 6.9/10. The list of remakes and re-adaptations that have lower ratings on IMDB than their early counterparts are in the vast majority. Not only that, but the rating for the earlier version tends to be significantly higher.

I’ve actually only seen Death Takes a Holiday. When Meet Joe Black came out I’m pretty sure my friends and I dismissed it as a “chick flick”. Although I’ve matured slightly over the years (maybe?) I never bothered to check it out. I will state that I much prefer Brat Pitt as he’s aged. Back to thread I think it’s definitely true that IMDb scores are skewed towards newer films based off of what I think is their typical users nowadays. I know I quit looking at it much once the forums were shut down. I think most folks that watch classic film probably left the same time.

In the case of most skewed towards newer films, that might be true in some cases, but most remakes have lower (often much lower) than the originals on IMDB. I have all the IMDB ratings listed here.
