Awww don’t make me choose. I can understand why people despise the remake, but seriously it’s not as bad as some people make it out to be. To be fair though this really does not have much in common with the original. The characters are totally different, tone is different, Jerry doesn’t have the roommate and a bunch of other stuff.
One thing that kinda bothered me about the remake was I didn’t think turning Peter Vincent into a stage magician who’s show dealt with vampires was just DUMB!! Their reason for not using him as a old horror movie host was even dumber. Honestly I think a cool idea would have been a female Elvira like Peter Vincent. Also movie hosts still existed and Marti Nixon didn’t know WHAT THE HELL she was talking about when she said they didn’t exist anymore. Heck even the straight to video sequel to the 2011 Fright Night had a better idea to turn Peter Vincent into a Ghost Hunters type host.
Ok my vote goes to the original.

I didn't know people despise the remake. I thought it was mediocre, but nothing about it is flat-out bad. It doesn't have much in common with the original? There are some big changes, but follows a very similar story and has the same basic characters and everything. The remake gives the mother a bigger role is the thing that stuck out the most. The remake is lighter on the OTT horror stuff and that is part of why I don't like it. Colin Ferrell is sort of interesting in the role, but he lacks the presence and creep factor of Chris Sarandon.

I can't vote since I haven't seen the remake, but I'll say it has a hard act to follow. The original was very good and very well executed.

The remake had David Tennant that alone beats anything from the original.

Honestly I think a cool idea would have been a female Elvira like Peter Vincent. That's a case where a gender swap would make sense and offer new possibilities.

1985.
I love 80s cheese and consider it to be the best vampire flick of that decade.

The original is an 80s cult-classic, which combines comedy, romance, horror and suspense, along with some terrific performances and special effects, love the Rear Window vibe it has going, and of course the atmosphere, also comes with a damn fine soundtrack as well. The remake, I kind of forgot about, almost instantly. Not bad, just kind of bland and never cared once, for any of the main characters.
Fright Night (1985) - 8,5/10 Fright Night (2011) - 4/10

I just realized something else the original did better too. The remake proved WAY TOO EARLY Jerry was in fact a vampire. I wished they had proved it later in the remake or that they had done something where Jerry was just a serial killer. In fact I think Jerry being a serial killer in this remake would have worked better for this version of Jerry. It also would have knocked everyone for a loop.

That would have been a great idea, but I think many people would have been pissed. If you ask me there weren’t enough Vampire things he did really. Maybe it’s because I’m comparing it to the original, but except for biting people he really didn’t do much of anything that remotely resembled a vampire. He didn’t turn into a bat, never slept in a coffin and other things. I even think at one point I forgot he was even supposed to be a vampire. The mom made very good reasons in the remake as to why he couldn’t possibly have been a vampire. Heck I think an even cooler idea would have been that charley basically loses the argument that Jerry is a vampire and gets sent to the crazy house and at the very end before credits roll you see Charley getting taken to the crazy house and then the camera pans to Jerry who is smiling or laughing and you can see his fangs which proved he was IN FACT a vampire. Like the whole movie could have been about trying to prove to everyone that Jerry was a vampire, but the evidence isn’t strong enough and maybe you see Jerry and Charley get into it with each other with Jerry basically telling Charley to knock it off while not letting it show to charley he is a vampire. Yeah it probably would have pissed people off, but it would have been a very different take on Fright Night.

'85 although I liked the remake quite a bit. McLovin was pretty funny as Evil Ed in the remake. As for the original I never realized until fairly recently that Tom Holland also wrote Cloak & Dagger which was one of my favorite films growing up.
'85 - 8/10 '11 - 7/10

The original came when slasher films dominated. That's what also made it so refreshing, especially lines like:
"I have just been fired because nobody wants to see vampire killers any more, or vampires either. Apparently all they want are demented madmen, running around in ski masks hacking up young virgins."
There was a quasi remake of Fright Night done with Kevin Sorbo is a tv host and he gets approached to help kill a werewolf.

Similar to the commentary of Targets (1968).
