Red Dragon - 7.5/10
Manhunter - 6.5/10
If these 2 movies were combined, it would be one of my favorite movies.

Red Dragon The cast is the biggest difference maker for me.In part, but my biggest issue is that I dislike the last act and the style of the movie is sometimes overbearing. If not for the last act I would rate it 7/10.

I feel like if you gave Michael Mann Ratner's script and cast and had Mann make it in like 1997 or something it would be better than Manhunter and Red Dragon.

I sort of agree, but I think the script for Manhunter has more depth overall. I think if someone were to combine the best elements of both movies together, then it would make for a great movie. Red Dragon was written by Ted Tally, the same guy who wrote The Silence of the Lambs. Red Dragon and Manhunter have the same cinematographer interestingly enough.

Part of what makes Red Dragon so effective to me is that Dolorhyde thinks he is ugly, but he isn't. Tom Noonan is not an attractive man to begin with and Mann goes out of his way to make him look even scarier.

Red Dragon, fro Ralph Fiennes and Edward Norton

Red Dragon, fro Ralph Fiennes and Edward Norton I prefer Peterson over Norton, Steven Lang over Hoffman (slightly), Emily Watson and Fiennes over Allen and Noonan, Farina over Keitel and Hopkins far and away over Brian Cox. Brian Cox leaves almost no impression on me as Lecter. I have an issue with Hopkins' age in the movie, but I am able to look past that. It was unavoidable. For me the Manhunter / Red Dragon comparison is the most interesting of all the other adaptations and remakes, because The Silence of the lambs is my favorite movie and Hopkins as Lecter is one of my 10 favorite performances of all time, if not my favorite. Even more interesting because I am normally a big fan of Michael Mann and not at all a fan of Brett Ranter. Though I have heard that Norton was doing a lot of the directing, which would make sense for why Red Dragon is so much better than every other movie Ratner has directed. Edward Norton's Motherless Brooklyn is terrific imo.

I wasn't impressed with PS Hoffman. He acted like he was on drugs. No doubt he was. Ed Norton is one of my favorite actors so I'm biased there.
Curious if the order you seen he films influenced you. I seen Red Dragon first. Like the Shining book v. movie. f you read the book first, you liked it better 95% of the time. I'm one of the exceptions

I saw The Silence of the Lambs first, then Manhunter, then Red Dragon. I think Hoffman is quite good. I think he captures the bottom feeding nature of the character very well. He could have been on drugs, but you could say that about most of his performances, considering he was a drug addict. Edward Norton is also one of my favorite actors and I like him way more than Peterson in general, but I think he is miscast here.

Red Dragon. Dolarhyde was such a disgusting monster but I still felt a bit sorry for him, Fiennes was very effective at making him a sympathetic villain.
