I agree with Apocalypse Now completely and Full Metal Jacket.
I’ll add Flight of the Intruder and Bat*21 to the excellent films already mentioned.
For the French involvement (First Indochina War) some really good ones are:
The 317th Platoon
Jump into Hell
The Lost Command (first portion, the rest is about Algeria)
The Quiet American (the Audie Murphy one)
