Before anyone even asks, I Am Legend literally credits the screenplay of The Omega Man.

Surprised you didn’t add the last man on earth to the poll. Regardless my vote would always be Omega Man

The Omega Man is extremely dated but that adds to it’s appeal and I’d rather see the hero watch Woodstock in an empty cinema over him watching Shrek on his TV. The Last Man on Earth came closest to capturing the book though.

Omega Man, 'I am Legend' is not a bad movie but I just HATE those CGI vampires.

There's also the Asylum rip off I AM OMEGA (I have to give them credit--that's a great rip-off title).
Of the three, the Price version is the best IMO.
You know, there are things about I Am Legend I like--but Heston was Matheson's choice for the role and yet, they so screwed it up--even Heston said the film was a disappointment.
That's a case where the diversity was shoe-horned in for bad effect.
Adding the black woman and kid turns it into a urban race discussion, which adds nothing to it. I am trying to think who would have been good as the woman vampire character in the book. Maybe Elizabeth Hartman or Sandy Dennis...

Omega Man, 'I am Legend' is not a bad movie but I just HATE those CGI vampires. That is enough to make the movie bad imo. That isn't a small detail, it is a huge factor of the movie making the main threat cgi. That makes sense for movies where the character needs to be cgi, but here it is just so lazy.

The Omega Man
I’d literally beg my parents to stay up late in the very early 80s when it could come on TV. Think it came on as the Abc Sunday Night movie once. It was one of my favorite movies for a long time.
“There is no phone ringing, damnit!”

I am not fan of either movie, but I'll go with The Omega Man (with all its flaws).
I Am Legend started out promising until they got to the cgi leap frogging vampires/zombies (whatever they were) and the movie quickly began to run down. Matheson's dark novel was corrupted into a standard action opus and vanity production.
And for the record:
I saw The Last Man On Earth in 1964 and initially thought it was grade d cheap and unappealing. It is one of the few films to which I've given a positive re-appraisal. Vincent Price's demoralized protagonist is far more engaging that Charlton Heston's channeling of Ben Hur and the depressing, claustrophobic ambiance of his existence is closer to Matheson's book than either of the remakes.

Yes, THE LAST MAN ON EARTH is the closest to Matheson's novel.
Yet THE OMEGA MAN has the best dialog of the three adaptations. (Reams of quotable lines.)

I strongly disliked I Am Legend. Why did you dislike it. The CGI zombies looked awful and were about as threatening as a feral cat. It was a movie that made use of a standard horror movie premise but with the feel and direction of a mainstream action flick, something that rarely appeals to me. 28 Days Later is a much better example of a movie that uses this kind of premise and does so extremely well. And that one didn't try to skirt away from the horror elements.

1971 fun movie, Heston immersed in the hippie nirvana which is Woodstock is hilarious. 7/10
2007 - saw it once, will NEVER waste my time with it again. 1/10
