It seems like almost half of them take place in a much earlier time. Which is strange because pretty much no other director has half of their films take place in an earlier time. Except for those, that mostly made westerns. Like john ford for example.
Well, assuming that his next film will take place in the past also. Then that would mean, that almost half of them...
You ever notice that?

More than half of Martin Scorsese's movies take place in the past.
At least half of Steve Spielberg's movies take place in the past as well.

If a director does a western, or WWII film, then obviously it takes place "in the past"... While I am not really sure that, that most Tarantino films take place "in the past"... Tarantino frequently does "homages" in his films which reference the past. Characters dressing in older styles, listening to older music, talking about older films and so on. But just because the "look" of the movie seems "out of the past", doesn't mean that it doesn't take place "in the present." Maybe he does this so the movie will never feel "Dated" to some... I still don't know how a movie made 40 years ago, becomes "dated", when it was made 40 years ago... That's just the most stupid thing anyone can say. Movies made 40 years ago, were never meant to look "modern", to audiences 40 years later.

I never really got the impression that Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction take place in the past in the past.

I'll say one thing about it just sayin'.
It's interesting kinda, that the first half of his career all his films take place in the present day. But then starting with the one after death proof they took place in older settings.
It's interesting because... In death proof, that film could almost have taken place in any previous era. And it would still work just as well. I could be wrong but if i recall correctly that took place in 2007 or whenever it came out. But it totally could have taken place in the late 60's.

His last 4 films were all taking place in the past at some point (Basterds, Django, Eight and Hollywood), but beforehand, they could have taken place in their present time.

Possibly.

OP is talking about only his WWII movie, his 2 westerns and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, which takes place in 1969.

Death Proof is meant to feel like the 1980's I think.
