Although I prefer the 2010 version I still think of Wayne when I see the name Rooster Cogburn.

The original is the best. That's usually the case anyways, but most definitely in this case. Robert Duvall's presence alone makes the original better.

True Grit (2010) is just badass. Brilliantly acted and filmed.

1969 by far. Didn’t care for the remake at all. John Wayne is great in the original. But it’s a pity they killed off the younger male character, he doesn’t die in the book.

I haven’t posted until now because I keep going back and forth trying to pick one. I like both movies, I’ll leave it at that.

I much prefer the remake.
Hathaway: 5/10
Coens: 10/10
I never saw the original all the way through until feeling compelled after seeing the remake. The remake is much darker and the ending asks, how could you think a young girl could go see so much violence and death without being marred by it.

The remake is much darker and the ending asks, how could you think a young girl could go see so much violence and death without being marred by it. Well that's the thing. I feel like Hathaway's film has more of a cute, sitcommy feel to it. The Coens version was much more raw and ended in a more honest and satisfactory way, at least to me it did.

2010. Rare for me to pick a remake over the original. Even though they are almost word for word replicas, I thought the Coens did a better job. Wayne was good but he done better. TG was in the "Funny Fat Man" stage of his career. McClintock!, Big Jake, Rooster Cogburn. Entertaining, but not up to Red River or the Searchers. Kim Darby was so irritating I was rooting for the rattlesnake.

For me, this is very close..
True Grit 2010 is undeniably the best movie the Coen Brothers ever had a hand in, but that's because they did two things. They stayed true to the original classic, and when they added, they added based on historical credibility.
John Wayne, never known as a great actor, usually played roles that were comfortable for him, so it was no problem. This role may have been his best performance. In Searchers, Big Jake, Comancheros, he was being himself a lot. Here, he was portraying another character. Everyone performed well. When that happens, it's the director, editor, camera crew, and support people who actually are responsible.
Really hard to say. The 1969 looked more natural. The 2010 looked more like someone struggling to look natural. It's the difference between James Cagney doing himself, and Rich Little doing James Cagney. Most people will be pleased more by the showy mimic, but he also looks fake.
That's the cost of trying too hard to look natural instead of being natural.
TRUE GRIT 1969 9/10 TRUE GRIT 2010 8/10
