Superman is still the greatest superhero movie in history and simply one of the greatest, biggest and most epic masterpieces of all time.
Donner was a legend. Too bad very few people will remember him in Italy today, just because - few hours ago - there has been a huge death/loss in our country that crushed us: Raffaella Carrà, the biggest and most popular Italian TV star.

I wouldn't say it's the #1 best but it's earned its place in history. Also still the best Superman movie after all these years.

Nah, it's good but I still rank the following over it:
Logan Batman '89 Batman Returns Xmen-2 Xmen: First Class Iron Man

It's certainly done wonders for the genre and we have Richard Donner to thank for it.

I really disliked it when I first saw it '78 (I was in high school), and my opinion hasn't changed much.
Reeve is great, the score is great, but everything else is campy Batman '66 garbage.
Yeah, Lex Luthor is a criminal genius... who hires OTIS as his top henchman. Uh huh, sure.

It's the first movie I remember seeing in an indoor cinema and it really blew me away.
Journeyman directors aren't regarded well-Donner wasn't like a Spielberg--he would take a directing assignment instead of initiating it. He was considered for Jurassic Park-I would have liked to see what he would have done with it.
Donner is the one who kept the movie as serious as it was because I don't think the Salkinds cared if Superman was serious or not-based on Superman 2 but also the Three Musketeers. Donner is the one who treated Superman the character in a serious fashion. Before Luthor shows up--it is totally serious. Same with the Omen. A story about Satan's son? That could have been a joke. As I said in another thread--Donner had done so much tv--that he could do the genre stuff easily while choosing to be serious when he wanted to.
He also did Danger Island.
Uh oh! Chongo!

I actually prefer Superman II, but the 1978 film is good.

Don't know if I'd go that far, but it's a great movie.

Maybe he had Otis to keep the police underestimating him?
They had an Otis in the animated Superfriends show--but that Luthor was the serious type--so it is stranger that he would have such a dummy around.
Hackman's Luthor was clownish anyway.
Maybe he had Otis so Miss Tessmacher would seem smarter or flatter him more.
"Otisburg? Otis-burg?"
"Miss Tessmacher has her own place!"

Close call between Superman and Superman II, but clearly one of those two is the best super hero film ever made. Denying that fact would be sillier than a Monty Python walk.

"Hey man, that is a baaad outfit!"
I think it was smart to have the pimp make that comment when he first emerges in the costume so audiences weren't going to laugh at it later.

I think they were trying to have it both ways. After all, a Superman movie in the 70's? So they loaded the script with comedy and send it out like a blimp filled with helium. Films that play it down the middle seldom work for either side. This one was wildly successful.

I liked Superman 2 but some of the humor is ridiculous-although I do like the guy in the phone booth.
Donner said he would not have done the yokel stuff with the sheriff and deputy.
I prefer the Lester scene with the mother instead of Brando's floating head.
And I do not like the second time travel ending.
