I liked Superman 2 but some of the humor is ridiculous-although I do like the guy in the phone booth.
I actually find those scenes rather humorous...
That guy kept laughing and laughing even after the phone booth was all but destroyed... Great Infectious Laugh that made me laugh too... BUT... Was the phone booth totally destroyed? It looked like it. So why was he still laughing...
The clerk on the skates that was blown down the street... Yeah, Uncontrolled Sail Skating. Totally Funny.
And the dog barking. Not particularly funny, But I remember it.
I understand why so many people hate all that Lester comedy, though, but it wasn't as bad as people make it out to be.
And even in Superman III... If you really pay attention, Lester NEVER treated Superman as a Joke. He was always heroic. Lois rooting for Superman at Niagra Falls in II was perfect... Now, what Lester did with Clark, that was kind of fair game. Even Donner made out Clark to be a bumbler and a joke...
Now if Lester had toned the comedy down, just a little bit, his sequel films would have been better.
Donner said he would not have done the yokel stuff with the sheriff and deputy.
Yeah, that stuff was a bit much...
I like that they took the part with the kid and his father being bullied out of the Donner Cut.
I liked Superman 2 but some of
I prefer the Lester scene with the mother instead of Brando's floating head.
I've got mixed emotions...
I prefer Clark talking to his mother about giving up his Superman identity, because he loves Lois...
But, I like the part where Clark goes back, and Jor-el restores his powers.
Using it in II was a bad idea from the start...
It completely undid the entire movie, and cheats the audience... and it makes Superman too powerful, to just randomly undo everything...
It really only works in the first movie... He goes crazy of the death of Lois, and just goes back far enough to deal with the missiles and saves Lois life.
Also, Donner didn't really execute Superman time travelling very well... Everyone always says, even by Donner and crew, that he turns the world backward. We know that is impossible, and it's not what was is even depicted... Watch it again... Those rings are bits of light coming off of Superman as he flies around the Earth. He has to be traveling at the speed of light for that to happen... Science claims that time slows down as you approach light speed... So going faster, must make time go backward, not the Earth.
And as for further proof that Donner didn't know what he was doing... At the end of the Donner Cut, the Diner Bully can't possibly know who Clark is.
I've heard that if Donner had come back to finish II, that he would have done a different ending... because, you can't do time travel, two movies in a row...
I just pulled out my Blu-Ray copy of the 3 hour and 8 minute long TV Cut of Superman I, and gave it a re-watch in remembrance for Donner's passing...
Yeah, there is a lot in it, that slowed the film down, which is why the movie was cut down for the Theatrical Cut... But even with all that Un-necessary extra padding in there, it was still good stuff, and you could still see how great a film maker Donner was even with those scenes...
My only real problem with it, is seeing the fallen Hollywood sign, right itself, when Superman fixes the San Andreas Faultline...
R.I.P.
