I’m gonna go with the remake. I like the original, but I think the remake was funnier.

Both Lewis and Murphy were at the height of their careers when they made their respective versions, and both began to fade soon after. They also shared a manic comedic energy (more tempered in Murphy) and dramatic foundation to successfully bridge the gap between their Jekyll/Hyde characters, especially Lewis who forever afterward denied that Buddy Love was a representation of Dean Martin.
I thoroughly enjoyed the 1996 remake but I haven't had the desire to see it again, whereas, I've seen the 1963 movie several times over the years.
So, a vote for the original.

1996
I can't stand Jerry Lewis in the original.

Not a huge fan of either film but a slight edge to the original.

Eddie Murphy is funny and Jerry Lewis isn't. 1996 for sure

The 1996 is more funny in a slapstick way. The 1963 has more subtext.
I will vote for the acting over special effects in 1963.

This time the remake is better, by a good margin, IMO.
I usually like the older movie better, but this is one time where the 1963 movie looks more like a spoiled brat 1996 movie, and the 1996 movie looks more like an artistic 1963 movie.
The biggest problem with 1963 is that it came when Jerry Lewis was trying to "make a point", and get away from his stereotype, and he tried too hard. He just wasn't funny. Pretty bad when a comedy is "preachy".
hand it to those involved in the remake to do it correctly.

I usually go with the original, but not in this case. I thought the Eddie Murphy version was much better.
