Okay, I'm gonna play along with this kind of thread that has become so dang popular here in the last week or so, and I'm gonna do one for my boy Orson Welles.
Just about every poll that I've seen has ranked these 3 films as the best of Orson Welles's American made films, so I'm going with these 3 classics. Perhaps you feel films like The Trial and Chimes at Midnight are better, but let's focus on these 3 American films for this poll.
Citizen Kane
The Magnificent Ambersons
Touch of Evil
All are incredible films, but if you must choose one, what do you pick?

The Magnificent Ambersons- 8 (I might rate it higher if the surviving version weren't so obviously butchered by RKO. What remains is a tattered, tantalizingly brilliant hint of the masterpiece that might have been.)

Ambersons was butchered with a tacked on phony happy ending, but it was still my choice. The last 10 minutes should be avoided, but the rest of it is so magical, it's always been my favorite Welles film. Hopefully there is still an outside chance the lost footage might be out there. Fingers crossed. Personally, I put Kane 3rd behind Ambersons and Touch of Evil. |
