This one is tough for me. I think both are extremely good. The only issues I had with the remake was Thornton and him being an exterminator in the remake. Thornton was just playing himself. He wasn’t playing Buttermaker. Also what was the reason behind Buttermaker being a exterminator and not a pool cleaner?
I’m not even gonna vote on this cause I think both are pretty good. Tie for me.

I'm a Billy Bob Thornton fan but he doesn't come close to Walter Matthew as Buttermaker.
Also, the movie shocked audiences in 1976 for the realistic portrayal of the way kids really talk among each other, particularly Tanner's racists comments about minorities and girls on the team. That kind of misfit kid magic only happens if you have the perfect cast to put it over and set the correct comic tone.
The film 1976 film is an original; the remake is empty imitation.
