This movie seems to have been largely forgotten. I think this came out in May of that year so it was clearly trying to be the start of the summer blockbusters. My review may be more of a rant on the movie and why the movie PISSED me off.
So this movie actually has an interesting story in my opinion. So for those of you who don’t know this movie is based, “loosely” and I mean VERY loosely based on the manhwa (basically a Korean manga/graphic novel) series of the same name. I was interested in reading this series because the author Min-Woo Hyung was actually inspired by the Monolith Ms Dos game BLOOD that came out in 97. Blood is probably one of my favorite FPS games right next to Doom. If you haven’t played it yet you should. I read the graphic novels and fell in love with them because of the story and I could totally see the inspiration from the games. He even admitted it in volume 3 he was inspired by the game.
The author had tried to get Priest into a movie, Anime and I think an MMORPG for years and I think the only thing that he was kind of able to get made was the so called “movie adaption”. Even then the movie languished in development hell for years. I think at one point it was supposed to be much closer to the series than what we got. The movie had gone through different directors and studios with every studio and director stalling on the project until director Scott Stewart director of Legion (….yay?) came and announced he would be directing it.
Already I could tell Scott had no care for the series. Doubt he even read it. They decided to get rid of Issac the main character of the series for an unnamed character just named Priest. Strike one. The movie would be another vampire movie. Strike two. The movie was announced to be pg-13. STRIKE THREE!!! The movie carried very little from the series except for the fact that the main character had a cross on his face and the setting would still be a Wild West setting. That was pretty much it. Gone was everything that I loved about the series.
The author was even disappointed too, but his response to it was that “this is probably where the series would have gone at some point.” Also something along the lines of “that’s Hollywood for you.” I remembered even watching the preview and was so stunned by how little it looked like the book.
I finally saw it on opening day and came out not totally hating it, but being pissed that they took a book series I really liked and wiped their asses with it cause they just wanted to make another vampire movie. If this movie hadn’t had the name Priest and didn’t have the author’s name attached I probably would have enjoyed this a little more. Not only did the movie have the author’s name attached to it, but in the end Tokoyopop the distributor of the books had their name attached.
All in all this was a TERRIBLE adaption of the books and if you haven’t read them I also suggest you do cause they are actually really freaking good and deserved a way better treatment than this movie gave.
