I'm aware that the 1953 film was itself a remake, but I doubt too many people on here (including myself) have seen the old movie.

I honestly have no problem with the 2005 remake. My issue with it honestly is that it’s more of a Tourist Trap remake, but I CAN see how it’s also a loose remake of the 53 movie. Tie for me.

It absolutely takes a lot from Tourist Trap, yeah.

I'm aware that the 1953 film was itself a remake, but I doubt too many people on here (including myself) have seen the old movie. I haven't seen the ’05, but I have seen the ’33 Mystery of the Wax Museum and far prefer it to the ’53 House of Wax, which—notwithstanding Price—I find overlit and pretty darn dull. The ’33 isn’t perfect, but it’s got fantastic early Michael Curtiz direction, the lovely Fay Wray, Lionel Atwill at his looniest, cool early technicolor, and a better script. Also, as William K. Everson pointed out, the ’33’s then-contemporary setting actually makes it spookier and more atmospheric than the ’53: When we move from the sleek ’30s streets to the creepy wax museum, it seems like terror is intruding on the everyday. By contrast, the ’53’s Victorian streets are just as sinister as the wax museum, making the museum feel like no big deal. (Also recommended: Doctor X [’32], also directed by Curtiz and starring Wray and Atwill, to which Wax Museum is something of a spiritual sequel.)

I'd have to go with '53 for Pryce and the fun 3D (my blu-ray comes with it). Though the '05 one is a fairly decent slasher for what it is, with above decent set design.
Full disclosure: I've seen the '33 one also. Probably rank it third.

I've only seen HoW '05, but it's honestly one of my favorite horror movies. The set pieces and effects are really amazing. I'm not afraid to recommend it. I think most people would like it if they saw it.

The Price is right. I liked the 2005 one until I saw Tourist Trap.

I didn't think too highly of the 2005 version when I first saw it, but perhaps I should give it another try.
Tourist Trap is one of those cases where I can't decide whether I actually liked it or not. The presentation has a certain originality to it, but I just didn't find it scary at all, although the final scene is quite memorable.

Actually very close for me. I think the 2005 version is actually a pretty solid horror film. I don't care enough about the characters though, which holds it back a bit.
1953 - 7/10
2005 - 6.5/10
I have seen the 1933 version and give that one 7/10 also, so all 3 are pretty close.

I agree. Mystery of the Wax Museum is a dark nightmare compared to the high gloss of House of Wax and no one can equal Lionel Atwill for sheer depravity. I like both films (saw House of Wax in '53, but without the 3D. It made me a life long horror movie fan).
The unmasking scene is better handled in House of Wax. In 1933, Fay Wray tears the mask away from Atwill's face and he simply stands there looking ashamed, like a kid caught stealing candy. In the remake, Phyllis Kirk has the sense to scream and faint dead away, after which the movie kicks into high gear for the finale.

House '05 is a remake in name only, as some have said it's more of a remake of Tourist Trap. Regardless it's a great slasher movie and I voted for it over the Vincent Price movie, which I also really like. House '05 is stylish, suspenseful, and pretty well put together, and just from a pop culture standpoint, how can you vote against a movie that marketed itself with the tagline "See Paris Die".?

I wouldn't say it is a remake in name only. It just changes it from Price wearing a fake face to the character having a brother who is disfigured (and named Vincent). It also still involves a wax museum obviously and making people into wax. I'd say it is a combination remake of Tourist Trap and House of Wax. I didn't like it, because I felt nothing for any of the characters and I am not much of a fan of modern slasher movies. I do like Tourist Trap to a certain extent, back when slasher movies were more fun and more creepy. I am also not a fan of Brian Van Holt as the villain in the 2005 version and I can't stand the fact that Paris Hilton is even in it, regardless that she gets killed in it.

1953 version.
It's my favourite horror movie of the early 50 and Vincent Price's first standout role. Remains disturbing to this day.
