Haven’t seen Purple Noon, but much to my surprise I was mostly bored by Talented Mr. Ripley. For the most part I just kept thinking how much better Hitchcock would’ve adapted it.

Talented Mr. Ripley by a slim margin. I saw it in the theater and was very intrigued by the story and the performances by Law and Damon. Purple Noon is visually more interesting though, the cruise on the sailing yacht was done really well, the building tension was done effectively. The one thing that almost threw me out of the film though was the character of Freddy played by Billy Kearns. I know it was a French film for primarily French audiences but it seemed a little awkward that Kearns was actually an American actor playing an American but then dubbed (?) in French for the film. It just seemed out of place for some reason.

Both are terrific with a marginal lead to ‘99.

I saw Ripley first, then saw "Purple Noon" last year... "Purple Noon" -- no contest.
