1982. Just the score alone is a masterpiece.

1982.
Amazing soundtrack, settings and cinematography. Arnie has never looked more the part and James Earl Jones kills it as Thulsa Doom. I rank it above The Terminator.

82 has cheesy, nostalgic fun. 2011 is a better overall movie. (Granted, I always liked the second Conan movie better than the first)

(Granted, I always liked the second Conan movie better than the first) 82 is not cheesey, it is gorgeously made and very brutal with a great score. It is a quality production, remake just looks like straight to video schlock The original is anything but "cheesy". That is something which fits more in with the lesser and more watered down sequel and Red Sonja, whom I would still watch anyday, anytime, over the god awful remake from 2011. That one was hyped up for some time, especially on several movie forums back in the day. And this new one, was gonna be the "real" Conan film, that "everyone" had been waiting so long for. And then it just turned into yet another generic looking piece of trash, and suddenly a lot of the hatred and ridicule towards the original and all the Arnold bashing, just somehow stopped. Well, they got their "masterpiece" alright. John Milius made such a beautiful movie, but one which also comes with a lot of brutal and unpleasant scenes, and of course, is backed up by one of the all time legendary scores by Basil Poledouris, pounding in the background, and which makes sure, even the lesser parts, feel far more powerful than they probably ever should have. But it works like magic. I think one of the best examples of how great the combination of Milius/Poledouris talents working together, was shortly after the ruthless attack early on, at the village, and where Thulsa Doom and his warriors, merciless slaughters almost the entire people of Conan, then for a short moment, the viewers is fooled into believing that Doom might spare the lives of the two lone survivors. Just one of many classy scenes, combining beauty with brutality. Not a single word spoken, yet so much emotions and focus on details, but without ever making it look cheap or vulgar. Which is something that the 2011 version sadly went all the way into making. But I guess one should early on, realize where it would go, just by taking a short look at the movie posters of the two versions, and already there, the difference in class is showing. One, as you said, looks like a cheap generic DTV release. The other is a damn thing of gorgeous beauty, and something I would have loved hanging on my wall. The sad thing, is that for a short while, I was actually a bit excited about this new Conan movie, but yeah, that did not last for long. Anyway: Conan the Barbarian (1982) - 10/10Conan the Barbarian (2011) - 3/10

When I look at the 2011 rating of mine. It kind of feels a bit too "generous", or at least of what I got out of it. However, it might have something to do with including likeable actors, such as Ron Perlman and Stephen Lang. But I guess that is still not much to go on.

I agree it is cheesy and I will never understand the love the movie gets. It just isn't my thing. It is a silly movie that I am unable to take seriously on any level. It does have a good score and good cinematography, I'll give it that. Still easily better than the generic 2011 version though.

I own the remake and still haven’t seen the original or even finished the remake. I really need to get the original at some point.

Seriously, am I the only person who liked remake/2011 movie? I'm not even a Momoa fan (my sister is, and I went with her to see it), but I really enjoyed it. I especially liked Nonso Anozie and Said Teghmaoui

I wouldn’t call it cheesy with the exception of ‘Do you want to live forever?’ especially when it is repeated in the absurd scene when the Veleria spirit saves Conan’s life in the final battle, but even then I thought that the scene had earned that indulgence and was actually very beautiful.

I haven't seen the 2011 one. Conan is the ultimate victim of wokeness and that was true in 1982 as well because the Arnie Conan has little in common with the pulp character. He is supposed to be a simple adventurer guy--like Reb Brown's Yor--he's very Conan-like--going off on fantasy adventures. There's not much fantasy in the 1982 film. The sequel has a little more of that.
He's supposed to be somewhere from the north of the UK--celtic or something. He wasn't a slave either.
One thing I remember from a reader's comment in a magazine was "how ugly" the women were in the movie. He was really upset about that. lol
I don't think Sandahl Bergman was the best choice for Valeria.
Kalidor in Red Sonja is closer to REH Conan than the original movie. He was supposed to be Conan but he's closer to the pulp character in that one.

I prefer the Beastmaster to either film.
But if I had to choose I’d go with the 82 version even though I’m not a huge fan. It’s a sweaty nightmare dream of a film. Has the audio always sounded funky? It seems like at least portions of it were dubbed. At least it did on VHS and DVD. The remake was okay but I wasn’t a big fan of the scene where Conans dad performs a c section.
