What do you think of this?
I'm surprised by how much I still enjoy it as an adult. I like the gritty feel it was given, as opposed to the sequels which really are just children's movies.

I never liked the live action movies. The costuming was clunky looking, & all the baddies were ridiculous.
They were barely a step up from Super Mario Bros. for me.

Far and away the best of the live-action films.

Still no explanation for how he survived being crushed in a garbage truck. Even a hydraulic press took out The Terminator.

I loved it!!! 2 was good as well. The other ones I try not to think about.
What’s funny is people see the first one as an adaption of the cartoon which makes no sense cause the style is more like the Comics that the cartoon was based on. 2 I think was more like the cartoons.

Probably one of the most underrated comic book films these days. The biggest benefit it had was how independently made it was. No major studio really wanted to take a chance on it even with the popularity of the cartoon. That independence allowed the film to pretty much be as accurate of a comic adaption as would have been allowed while still making sure kids can watch it. Sadly, most comic book films will never know such luck and freedom.

I re-watched it a couple years ago for the first time since I was a teenager and it does hold up well.
I can't say the same about TMNT 2: Secret of the Ooze.

I am still a fan of the cartoon as an adult. I tried re-watching 2 a while back and it just doesn't work for me, but I loved it when I was a kid.

What about in the second film where drinks the rest of the entire last vile of Ooze and not only is able to mutate himself into a white guy but also mutate his entire suit?

Super Shredder looked pretty dope but was quickly defeated by his own stupidity. Fortunately the concept was revisited for the 2012 animated series, and done so much better there as well.

Yea...i think i rewatched the first two last year and was surprised at two things...how much i still enjoyed the first film, and how much less i enjoyed the second film. I still enjoyed the second, but it lost all its grittiness and weapon combat and replaced it with silly slapstick kids humor.

It ages so much better than a lot of movies that used CGI, for one. Even the soundtrack aged well! I'd have to agree with some of the above comments, that it seems surprisingly gritty for "a kid's movie", and almost feels more like it isn't a comic book movie at all. It was more like someone serious about SciFi & Action movies, was brought in to do it, so it still has the funny one-liners of a traditional action movie while having a realistic take on the fantastic idea of ooze-boosted turtles and a rat. Another thing that really struck me, when I rewatched it for the first time in a long while --- how much it really goes into the ideas of family, growing up, self-identity, brotherhood, tradition vs. going into the future, and having a solid, caring male role-model for the Turtles in Splinter.
PS: I've also never known another movie that more successfully made a rat seem as cuddly as a puppy.

The creators did an excellent job of combining the gritty tone of the 80s comics and New York City of that era with some of the playfulness of the kids cartoon. The film's willingness to explore themes such as fatherhood and loss ensure that this is more than just a soulless exercise in corporate film-making. And the fight scenes are superbly choreographed. All accompanied by a rocking soundtrack that gets me swaying to this day. Truly, one of the great comic book movies.
