How come they didn't retain the subtitle for the newer ones?

Because the subtitle is more recognized with the 1925 version. The MGM/UA VHS & Laserdisc, the film’s entry in IMDb and Wikipedia go by the full title, whereas the other versions are referred to only as ‘Ben-Hur’. To be sure, the 1959 film does have the subtitle (it’s the second title), but the 1925 is more recognized. I guess they didn’t bother with 2016.

Only seen the Charlton Heston version and in this case I would feel very comfortable voting for it without having seen the other 2, but I still won't.
Ben-Hur (1959) is a masterpiece imo.

1959. I actually own the remake as well, but still have not seen it whole way through. I try to get the originals with the remakes even if the remakes suck ass. It just feels wrong not to have both lol.

1959 is one of the greatest movies of all time. That chariot race is legendary. Heston owned the role.

Both were staggering achievements in their eras, but there is no question the 1959 version is superior to the silent in every way, although I will cut the 1925 chariot race some slack.
Haven't seen the 2016 movie.
