I also prefer the remake. Just more fun.

1969: How will Caine and his colleagues get away with the loot while the streets are choked with cars? The solution - and the entirety of this comedy/crime caper - are some of the delights of the decade just ending and a couple of the most vivid memories of that era’s moviegoers. Still, it is very Swingin’ Sixties in that there is an almost entirely male cast and what women do appear are there only for the zipless pleasure of the men, mostly Caine. Get past that and you will have a good time.
2003: This came to the dollar theater so I went. Lots of explosions and chases featuring cars, boats, trains, and helicopters. Also we have rising actor Charlize Theron sporting small clothes. It was OK, I guess, but I would have been really pissed if I had paid more than a dollar to see it.

I saw the remake first and I liked it but the original has the more memorable ending. It is one of the better remakes and it is the best of the remakes of Michael Caine movies. I'm surprised they didn't get Caine to play the Donald Sutherland character in the remake. The got him for the remake of Get Carter and Sleuth.

The Italian Job 2003 was decent. It's not always easy to let behind the scenes activity stop the movie from being enjoyed as it is, but I can't watch it without recalling that Edward Norton did it under duress and was unhappy. When you're as good an actor as Norton, it makes a difference because his bare minimum performance would leave fans none the wiser, but if he cared about it then he could have elevated it even more.
The Incredible Hulk suffers for the same reason, also Norton. He's good in it because he's good period. He'll get to that stage in his career where he can roll out of bed and right into character. I know he hates Hulk and his time on it and it permeates his performance. I didn't even think he was well-cast before I knew he clashed with the writers.

Honestly, the 2003 one just seems like everyone involved was having more fun - and it's more fun for the audience. It isn't super-serious, it isn't reinventing the wheel, it's a fun caper movie with neat get-away cars. Bonus, the cast had surprisingly good chemistry together.

I can't stand Benny Hill, that's one of the reasons I disliked the original.

This was a tough one, but I gave the edge to the original because of Caine. The casting of the remake was well done though, Wahlberg in particular is in fine form. I just like the cars so much better in the original. Normally not a big deal in a lot of films, but they are a main plot point in this one.
