... in the last couple months, I've come to the following conclusion: they haven't made a single bad movie. Even the weaker entries in their filmography (The Ladykillers, Intolerable Cruelty, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Hail Caesar!) all managed to keep me thoroughly entertained. I'd like to hear if anybody else agrees, or disagrees, or hates them and their movies outright (I know some of you do...). In the meanwhile, my ratings/rankings are as follows:
1. The Man Who Wasn't There- 10/10 2. A Serious Man- 10/10 3. Fargo- 9/10 4. Raising Arizona- 9/10 5. True Grit- 9/10 6. The Big Lebowski- 8/10 7. No Country for Old Men- 8/10 8. Miller's Crossing- 8/10 9. Blood Simple- 8/10 10. Inside Llewyn Davis- 8/10 11. O Brother, Where Art Thou?- 7/10 12. Barton Fink- 7/10 13. The Hudsucker Proxy- 7/10 14. Burn After Reading- 7/10 15. Hail Caesar!- 7/10 16. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs- 7/10 17. The Ladykillers- 6/10 18. Intolerable Cruelty- 6/10

Haven't seen The Ladykillers.
Not a bad one among the rest. And mostly very good to excellent.
Even lesser Coens is better than 95% of movies of the last 20 years.

Hmm, I don't know about that. The Ladykillers was pretty bad and once you get past the retro style, there's not much to The Hudsucker Proxy;JJL is amazing in it though as a Rosalind Russell/Katherine Hepburn knockoff.

Interesting that you rank A Serious Man so highly as it usually doesn’t get high praise. I think it’s a great look at declining religion and family in the late sixties.

I think they're among the most consistent filmmakers working today. They have a couple of movies I don't care to revisit, but I enjoy most of their work.

I also agree that they haven't made a bad movie.
I enjoy The Ladykillers, Burn After Reading and Intolerable Cruelty more than not. O Brother just isn't my thing, but it is not a bad movie.
1. No Country for Old Men - 9/10 2. Fargo - 8.5/10 3. Blood Simple - 8/10 4. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs - 8/10 5. The Man Who Wasn't There - 8/10 6. Inside Llewyn Davis - 7.5/10 7. The Big Lebowski - 7.5/10 8. True Grit - 7.5/10 9. Miller's Crossing - 7/10 10. Barton Fink - 7/10 11. The Hudsucker Proxy - 7/10 12. A Serious Man - 7/10 13. Hail, Caesar! - 7/10 14. Raising Arizona - 6.5/10 15. The Ladykillers - 6.5/10 16. Burn After Reading - 6.5/10 17. Intolerable Cruelty - 6.5/10 18. O Brother, Where Art Thou? - 6.5/10

Out of the ones that I have seen, No Country for Old Men and True Grit are great. The Ladykillers and Burn After Reading were fun but didn't like Fargo, The Big Lewbowski and Inside Llewyn Davis.

I have only seen three of theirs (Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men) but I enjoyed all of them.

Yeah, The Ladykillers is usually the one people point to as a misstep, but I found myself liking it, if only for Tom Hanks' hammy Southern gentleman.

Yeah, I think it and The Man Who Wasn't There are both severely underrated among the Coens' work. They are both kinda crushingly downbeat though, which might put a lot of people off, I admit.

I agree. Intolerable Cruelty is their only movie I don't fully like, but I still rate it 6.5/10, which is not bad.

I've seen about half of their films, and I haven't seen one that I considered to be a bad one. The Ladykillers probably comes the closest, but overall I enjoyed it, especially Hanks' performance.

I'm actually not a big fan of their oeuvre, but Hail, Caesar! was a pretty fun depiction of 1950's Hollywood and the Red Scare. I think that's probably one of my favorites of theirs. I also liked their remake of True Grit. One of the few remakes out there that is as good as the original. Ladykillers on the other hand was an example of an unnecessary and remarkably weak remake.
