For instance, Gene Wilder auditioned for Hedley Lamarr in Blazing Saddles but wound up getting cast as the Waco Kid, while Harvey Korman was cast as Lamarr.
Telly Savalas auditioned for Max Cady in Cape Fear but instead was cast as the private detective.

When Raymond Burr first auditioned for the classic TV series "Perry Mason" he was reading for the part of perpetual loser, D.A. Hamilton Burger. Of course, it is no secret that he got the lead role instead.

Cillain Murphy auditioned for Batman in Batman Begins. Christopher Nolan didn't feel he fit Batman, but he liked him so much he cast him as Scarecrow.

Glen Powell auditioned for Miles Teller role in Top Gun Maverick , twitter was so upset he didn't get cast, they expanded a secondary character just for him

I'm cheating a little, but De Niro auditioned for Sonny in The Godfather, but was cast as the young Vito in Part II instead.

Somewhat related? R Lee Ermey was hired as a technical advisor. for Full Metal Jacket but got the role as the drill sergeant. Tim Colceri had previously been given the role but was given the smaller role of the deranged door gunner.

R Lee Ermey also auditioned for the John Doe role in Se7en but was cast as the police captain instead.
Jason Statham auditioned for one of the main roles in Collateral, in the end Michael Mann gave him a cameo at the beginning.

Lance Henriksen auditioned for the Terminator role but ended up being cast as detective Vuckovich as Arnold got the role instead.

No one could have done that role as well as Spacey, and Ermey was terrific as the police captain. |
