The Day Of The Jackal (1973) - A gripping, intelligent thriller, perhaps not quite as exciting as the book, but excellent nonetheless. 7/10
The Jackal (1997) - A sloppy Bruce Willis vanity project, so his baldness would get the opportunity to play a camp bad guy. It lacks all the realism and smarts of the original, opting for B-movie-ish action instead. 4/10

I haven't seen The Jackal (97) since I was a teenager, but back then it was a comfort movie for me, I'd always watch it on cable and use Jackal as my handle when I went to Laser tag with my friends.

The Jackal is so stupid--they replace that cool little gun with a truck-mounted cannon.

Day of the Jackal for me. I have the bluray and it’s amazing. Edward Fox and Michael Lonsdale are perfect in their roles and the timing of the release of the film was perfect with the political environment in the late 60s and early 70s.
I saw the Jackal theatrically as at the time I never passed up anything Willis was in. I thought it was good back then but seeing it again a few years ago I realized how weak it was compared to “day”. It’s still an okay film in my opinion, I like the Jack Black appearance but it’s definitely a dumbed down version of the book and prior film.

I’m gonna feel stupid for asking this, but how are they even comparable? Except for a few things they’re not at all alike. Am I missing something?

I prefer the original. The remake isn´t that good, but I like Diane Venora and Jack Black characters.

You do realize that The Jackal is a remake of The Day Of The Jackal? They obviously differ in key points, because the remake has been updated to the 1990s.

Yes I knew that, but when I watched them both back to back and only noticed a few things that were similar. To me it was like saying that Hollow Man was a remake of The Invisible Man. Yeah they both are about an Invisible Man, but the stories couldn’t be more different.

Hollow Man is basically an updated take on The Invisible Man, but it isn't credited as a remake of that movie.

The Jackal I mean. If they hadn’t credited the original screenplay and still tried to say it was a remake of Day Of The Jackal I would have told you “no it’s not. The only thing similar is the Jackal.”

As far as I remember the Richard Gere character isn't even in the original.

I don't mind the remake, because I think Bruce Willis is quite creepy in it. He really holds the movie together. The Jack Black scene is great too imo.

The Jackal is so stupid--they replace that cool little gun with a truck-mounted cannon. To be fair, the people who hire him in the remake say they want it to be a very messy death.
