It felt like a sentimental love story between a girl and her androgynous sister under the larger context of a dysfunctional Russian sleeper cell family that meekly tried to be a comedy at the same time. Action was pretty cool but also boring somehow... and I dozed off at several points during the film. Florence Pugh was pretty cool though, she had a strong acting moment during the family dinner.
I mean I liked it, but it felt sorta sad almost like a funeral for the end of an MCU Era. The falling fortress ending was pretty bad ass.
I just feel like all these woman movies keep falling flat, like Birds of Prey. WW1984 was probably the strongest contender for me lately. I don't think enough gets put into the direction of these films.
Maybe I'm just getting old, maybe I'm a sexist, or both.

It was pretty slow at times and the CGI wasn't the best.

It was like the female version of Brokeback Mountain except as a superhero movie. Weird!!!

While I haven't seen that movie, somehow the text reminds me of something along the line Sea of Love even if they are two different concepts.

I saw it way back in the late 80s, I can't remember much about it other than being disappointed that it wasn't as steamy as it wanted us to believe it would be.

8/10 Is it just me, or would it have been safer for Natasha & Yelena to wait until getting closer to the ground to before using the parachute? With all the destruction around them, any object could've made a hole.

This seemed like the typical superhero movie to me. Most of my superhero movie ratings started at 10 and went down to 6 because at first I was impressed with the action and special effects. But over time it just became the same old thing over and over again --- great action and special effects. Silly dialogue and plot. This movie is no different. My only real complaint is the same with all these superhero movies --- the sound. The loud parts are really loud. And the low volume parts are really low volume. I made the mistake of starting this move late on a week night in an apartment building. I didn't want to disturb the neighbors. So I was constantly running the volume up to 80/100 for the low volume parts. All the way down to 15/100 for the high volume parts. There are lots of heavy eastern European accents in this movie. And lots of mumbling, whispering and low talking. And of course lots of screaming, yelling, explosions and loud music. And I didn't have closed captioning available. So if I didn't miss half the dialogue, I missed more than half. But apparently it didn't really make any difference. I got the general story. Natasha Rominoff (Scarlett Johansson) was raised in a fake family of Russian spies with a mother, a father and a sister. They are based covertly in Ohio. Once their cover is blown, they escape to Cuba where immediately the two girls are put in a spy training program. And the parents return to their normal adult spy lives.
21 years later, they find themselves back together again. The girls are resentful they didn't have a normal upbringing. After a family dinner --- where once again, I couldn't understand a word anybody was saying --- they all decide spylife ain't working for them anymore. And the head spy is kind of a dick. So they plan to bring it all down, and kill the head spy. The rest is all action and special effects.
I streamed this movie in high definition, and at a high speed. I thought the action and special effects were great. At least as good as any other superhero movie. 7/10 for me. Not the best superhero movie. But definitely not the worst.

I'm a big MCU fan, but I do think this movie ranks in the bottom tier of MCU movies. I liked it a bit more than WW84 but only just. Better than Birds of Prey or Captain Marvel though.
But the best female superhero movie is still the first Wonder Woman movie. Alita too if you consider her a superhero.
I feel like the studios struggle to make a good female superhero movie because they're trying to tick too many checkboxes instead of just concentrating on making it entertaining and hiring the best people for the job.
For example, Black Widow could have been awesome if they just hired the Russo Brothers to direct it.

I don't know if you're old or sexist, I know I quite liked Captain Marvel, and thought Birds of Prey was good enough for a movie in a franchise desperately trying to find its direction, and WW84 was a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. Black Widow just didn't do anything for me and I think it's for a combination of reasons, which I'll just list below with some elaboration.
- Black Widow, the character was introduced as a badass femme fatale for the MCU but over the course of the series became the Avengers' nanny. She never truly did anything for herself, she just went from being Hawkeyes support system, to Bruce Banners, to Steve Rogers etc. Blame this on having so many characters that she was never able to be the leader, star, aggressive force, or wild card. She was always merely a second in command in every scene she was ever in. Now this paid off in dividends with her character in Endgame when she finally took the leap (pun intended) to action and didn't just support someone else. But now 2 years later, we get her lead movie, and...
- They just make her another support system. This movie felt like it was the origin story for whoever Florence Pugh's character becomes and not actually Black Widow's movie, she's playing second fiddle once again, and honestly I don't care much for Florence Pugh, I know she gets hailed for her acting in Midsomer and Little Women, but when I watch her I just see a blank slate. She aced all her acting courses, checks every box for an audition, but I've never seen a bit of personality. Which leads us to...
- Scarlett Johannson has personality, but it's not action star lead charisma personality. She is really good at emoting things beneath the surface. You can watch her in her quiet scenes and she always looks like she's observing, calculating and plotting. This is why she is so good playing a spy assassin character, but her personality is almost that of an observational comedy. Most of her funny lines in these movies she's reacting to the boystrous wit of her co-leads with her form of dry wit. This doesn't work so well when you're the star and the comedic relief character (Red Guardian) is only in the movie for about 15 minutes.
- The plot just didn't work for me because I couldn't understand the political dynamics of the world within the movie. On paper it sounds great to make a superhero movie that's "The Americans meets Mission Impossible", but it begins in 1995, years after the fall of the Soviet Union, and then shoots to 2016 (presumably) where this guy who's Russian, but not KGB or even seemingly Soviet. I felt like this was a movie that actually needed an opening crawl explaining the geo-politics of this movie universe as it pertains to the Soviet Union. I felt Ray Winstone's character had some Harvey Weinstein coding to him and this Widow program was coding for Weinstein's casting couch victims, but it was coded well enough not to be too obvious, but geo-politically it didn't work for me.
- And neither did the action, I just didn't find any of the action all that thrilling.
So just in short, it didn't feel like a well thought out movie, and it's ultimately just another set up movie.
6/10

Like it or not the MCU movies are the most important movies of the 2010's, certainly the movies that will be most remembered. They're taken very seriously by Disney, Marvel Studios, and the batch of top level talent they've attracted over the years, and they're certainly taken serious by audiences who pile into the theater every time a movie is released. I hold them to the same standard I'd hold any other movie with such talent involved, and most times they deliver. This time they didn't.

Not sure if Pugh purposefully did workouts to build bulk, but she could Laid off the protein a bit imho. Height, nothing you can do.

I didn't enjoy it. From the beginning the over-the-top but silly fight scenes had me rolling my eyes. Widow gets slammed face first into a wall or pillar but is completely fine; gets thrown off a roof but is completely fine; sister the same; etc. etc. over and over. She isn't a super soldier as far as I'm aware and neither is her sister so what the heck? I know that a huge suspension of disbelief is necessary to watch a female throw men about as though they weigh nothing and I'm (kind of) okay with that, but this was too much. I stopped watching about half way through as I just wasn't interested enough in the story to overlook all the silliness.

You are taking things way too seriously. It's supposed to be entertainment. Not a documentary on the physics of violence.
