Though he does credit some people for trying something different. TEXT: The Suicide Squad writer/director James Gunn feels recent superhero movies have been too conventional, to the genre's detriment. Gunn discussed his apathy towards superhero films of late with SFX Magazine, admitting, "They're mostly boring to me right now! [Laughs] I loved them at the beginning and there are still people trying to do different things [with them], so it's not a 100% rule, but a lot of them are boring." Hoping to shake things up, Gunn drew from a variety of different genres while making The Suicide Squad, much in the same way John Ostrander's classic run of Suicide Squad comic books did in the 1980s. "I loved the idea of making a supervillain war caper film," he explained. "Films like The Dirty Dozen and Where Eagles Dare, those are of different elements from the backdrop of war and the caper heist element, to the sneaking around, the high stakes, the adventure." This isn't Gunn's first attempt at injecting some fresher elements into the superhero genre. His 2010 film Super was an unusually dark and comedic spin on the idea of costumed crime-fighters that bombed at the box office, with reviews criticizing the movie's extreme violence and dubious messages. Gunn would go on to enjoy far greater success with his return to the genre for 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy -- turning the lesser-known band of quirky, cosmic superheroes into household names. The Suicide Squad's plot follows the members of Task Force X on a mission to the fictional Latin American country Corto Maltese, where they set out to destroy a Nazi-era laboratory hiding dark secrets. "It gave me a great excuse to be able to create a film [in] a genre I've loved since I was a little kid, and do it in a big way and not have to hold back," Gunn added. www.cbr.com/the-suicide-squad-director-boring-superhero-movies/

But he's directing a superhero movie and the Guardians films were boring... Gunn is the weirdest fuck ever and that's not even including him dreaming about toddlers sexually.

So he’s throwing Marvel under the bus since they are responsible for most of them?

The first Suicide Squad film sucked big hairy balls. There’s easier ways to see hot girls doing Harley Quinn cosplay. No desire to see the second one. The first GotG was decent enough, second one was whatever. No one is confusing him with Stanley Kubrick except himself.

Corto Maltese
*isn't that the country Bruce Wayne mentions to Vickie Vale in Batman 1989?
I shouldn't know that. I have such a memory for useless things.

Of the long list of utter bonkers conspiracy laced probably somewhat true, but still downright absurd things I've seen you post on these forums over the years... I'd say your remembering of some obscure bit of comic book movie trivia isn't useless at all and is actually cute, that's right you're cute.

Ironic, since "Suicide Squad" is one of the most formula, conventional, safe, boring, routine super hero movie ever made. Not one bit of "risk taking" in that 1/10 ordeal.

James Gunn didn't direct the first one. David Ayer did.

Make up your mind. You're the one who posted in the very first post: So you're calling yourself a liar. You referenced the first movie in your post. James Gunn didn't direct that one which was titled Suicide Squad. He's directing the sequel which is called The Suicide Squad.

Superhero movies do feel largely formulaic these days, but this seems like a weird thing to hear from a director of superhero movies.
