This is not the first time that a team from outside the confederation has been invited to take part in the Gold Cup. The South American confederation also invites outsiders to the Copa America sometimes. Qatar probably got themselves invited in order to get some competitive match experience for the World Cup they are hosting next year.

Was rooting for Canada in that game, they were right there until the ninth minute of the eight minutes injury time. Lots of bad blood created, and well, it's Mexico, it's to be expected. There was even an official warning about the racist chants.
